Well, when you consider that oppression of black people extended well beyond slavery and into the 1960's with Jim Crow laws, maybe it's easier to see? These folks are only a couple of generations removed from that.

But I think this is just more an honor to their heritage and a display to show how far their race has come in this country.

And if the photo were taken in front of a hospital in Montgomery, AL that 50 years ago did not accept black patients, let alone black doctors, the comparison would be much more apt. But were are ~150 years removed from slavery era USA. So to return to the original premise of the OP, at what point is it ridiculous to continue celebrating oneself as a "victim" who overcame the struggles of their ancestors 6, 7, 8 generations ago? For instance, are we going to celebrate photos of Jewish investment bankers at Goldman Sachs standing in front of palace ruins in Egypt under the premise of "look how far we've come?"

I was also told my mcat wasn’t good enough. Logically, how is that true when a 498 is good enough for others?

Honest question, where did you end up going to med school? While the MCAT isn't great you could get into plenty of med schools with those numbers.

They weren’t doing that. They aren’t pretending to be victims.

That really sucks if true. Why can’t the standards be the same for everyone, regardless of race or sex? Just admit the most qualified person.

It’s always funny that people whine about minorities getting preferential treatment, but never cry about well connected white people who get into colleges based on connections, donations, or being a legacy.

Preferential treatment happens every day. Why bitch about it?

It’s a simple question, do you believe that we should continue implementing affirmative action?

Sure, I’d love to acknowledge their success. But of course they have to remind everyone that once upon a time many many years ago we made a terrible mistake. Which of course still holds them back in some manner.

Your MCAT isn't good enough in general.

You don't know their resumes. In my med school class we have people who scored 500 to 520, which is the top 50% of MCAT scores, and the group who had lower scores generally had something noteworthy in their background which drove admission. If you are in your early 20s, then having a good GPA and a decent MCAT isn't enough. That you got an interview shows that the problem was probably something in the interview. I had 12 interviews around the country and the places where I didn't get offers were definitely places where the interview wasn't perfect.

What a colossally ignorant statement. It's almost as if you think the multi-generational effects of legalized human bondage ended with a wave of the hand in 1865. Or that the state-sanctioned racism, discrimination, and violence of Jim Crow ceased to have any effect on black people beyond 1964. Or that even today, black people need not face the legacies of the nation's racial sins in their everyday life.

Seems like they're promoting segregation.

I agree. It's great that they have done well for themselves and worked hard. But how were they oppressed?

Bro they’re just appreciating their heritage. Their ancestors were slaves and now they are becoming doctors, they want to pay their respects I don’t have a problem with that.

My grandfather spoke German, was on Omaha beach, and liberated a concentration camp. I didn’t do any of that but I can still appreciate him right?

There are several posters on this board old enough to remember 1964. You act like that's ancient. Less than one lifetime is supposed to be enough to just erase the effects of 300+ years combined of slavery, Jim Crow, and segregation like they never happened?

Jewish people still talk about their slavery from 3000 years ago and I bet you don't cry about that
