They didn’t. I built my own house ( with help from friends ) when I was 20 years old.

Wasn’t forced to. I left for college 2 months after high school graduation. I spent one summer back home. Never moved back to live.

By the time I had a steady job, both my parents became ill (I was born late in their lives), so I stayed home until they passed. I would sell the house four years later.

I guess it was ok 40-50 years ago that the parents expected a kid to leave at 18.
In the current age, I don’t understand why either the parents or kids wear this as some kind of badge of honor.
Let them stay for a while after college as long as they are trying in some way to be productive and saving money.

Stayed at home through college to save money. After graduating my dad used to debate with me that I wasn’t ready to move out. I believed him for the first 15 or so months before I just moved out one night and said I’ll figure it out

Never. It just happened naturally with going to LSU and then moving to New Orleans for a while to work. I eventually moved back to my hometown and lived with my parents for a few months while looking for a place to live. My mother would love for me to move in with her. She's 91.

I moved out of my parents house a month after turning 18. Moved out of state 2 months later to go to college and never lived at home again.

You truly learn how to work, be incredibly responsible, and be very careful with your money, when you have no financial help from your parents and no safety net to rely on when you’re 18 and never look back.

I was 22 years old still living at home, had a good job saving money for a house. Parents said as long as I put 75% in the bank I could live there. About 3 months down the road I got in a traffic accident ( my fault ) . Called my girlfriend to come pick me up and go with my to my parents house to tell them. I knew my dad was going to kill me. So we walk in the house my dad was reading the paper. I said dad I have to tell you something. He said " you're moving out"?. Next week I was out.

Never. Left for college. Sometimes I came home for the breaks, sometimes not.
Still go visit, sometimes spend the night. Not sure the last time I slept there more than a couple nights, hurricanes excluded, but been a couple decades. Probably 04.

I moved out on my own at 18. They asked me back at 25 when my mom got cancer and she was worried about my dad. Living at home for 2 years was pretty freaking sweet.

I was told that if I was not in school (college), then I would have to pay rent if I wanted to stay at home.

I get that. I’ve heard several stories like this where the parents put that rent money into a savings account and gave it back to kids later on when they were trying to buy a house and such.

Moved home for the summer June after freshman year. Went back to school in August - they got divorced a month or two later and I guess that was them telling me to move out bc never had a bedroom other than my college apartments after that.

Did it make me a better person? Sure maybe.
The situation overall definitely made a few therapists wealthy though.

I moved out in August after high school when I started college. Came home the following summer and worked. My parents forgot I was 19 and not a child. Not like I was doing anything nefarious, in fact my little brother had a much more engaging social life that summer than me. Moved back to BR and never came home again for more than a week.

I don’t know how people move back in with their parents. I guess some people can have that type of relationship, but I never did. I’m too independent.

I moved out at 18 to Auburn for college, then to NC for a job.

My parents had a rule. Out by either 18 unless you are still in HS then its after graduation. Or if you stayed home you paid rent.

My two siblings moved out after graduating HS. I am 10 years younger and there was different circumstances by the time I graduated. My pops was really sick and had been in and out of the hospital... Mostly in. He passed away right before my second semester of college, but I stayed at home, since my mom was mostly home on only weekends or would come home for a week if my dad was in there for several weeks. However, she made me pay $200 a month...because once you turn 18 nothing is free.

Then my dad passed away, my older siblings were from my mom's previous marriage, my parents bought the house when married so I stopped paying rent, but paid the utilities. My mom laid down the law and she was all for tough love.

They never did. I grew up and moved out organically in college. Moved back in my senior year to work less and focus on school. Moved back out within 2 months of graduation.

After my dad passed away, my mom moved in with my family.
