When did mid tier restaurants go to complete trash?

I don’t go out to eat much anymore, so when we do it’s typically a nice, 5 star type steakhouse. Tonight, me and the wife were driving home from being out of town and figured we’d stop and eat quick.
We found the usual strip of Outback, Johnny Carinos, and PF Chang’s. We chose Johnny Carinos.
Walked in and it was the Mecca of trash. Everyone had shorts, t-shirt, and ball cap like they had been working in the yard all day. Kids were playing video games and watching movies on cell phones with volume full blast. To top it off, our bill was $70 for complete shite food.
I wasn’t expecting a great experience, but was I just too young in the past when thinking these places were somewhat good?
Also, when did they start to put the calorie count after each item on the menu? Like these fatties care they are taking in 2000-3000 calories in one sitting.

Honestly, those places are not great, but usually decent....sounds like you just happened by when there were a shitty bunch of folks there.
