I guess they got sick of paying 2026 prices out of pocket for classroom supplies with their 1991 salaries. A registry is a good idea for parents who can’t give of their time to still contribute meaningfully. If you or your spouse is one of those who shows up to help with every party or chaperone every field trip, F the registry. Let someone else pick up the slack.

I’ve got a few friends in FB that are elementary teachers. They post an Amazon wishlist every year and I always get around $100 for them.
I figure I waste enough money, at least this will actually go to help some kids

They were a thing when I was a child. The registries just make things more convenient than printing out a sheet of paper to hand to everyone.
School teachers are notoriously underpaid.
Invest in your kids' education you cheapass.

Also, lots of schools have SOME of the extra days you mentioned. In Texas, and presumably other states, there is a set number of instructional hours for the year. However a particular district wants to arrange is up to them so long as it falls within the academic year.

I do it for teachers that are friends or in my family. I don’t resent them for asking, they’re not people that ask for anything for themselves.

My mother was a teacher, now retired. She supported us on her teacher’s salary. Every fall, she was buying supplies for her classroom out of her paycheck. That money could have gone toward her own family’s needs, but she was expected to provide classroom supplies on her own. I have no problem with spreading the responsibility for these needs around, and taking the weight of it off of teachers’ shoulders.
