When I was a kid I loved buying school supplies for the upcoming year. It took some of the sting out of summer’s ending. Granted, we had cool stuff like trapper keepers and awesome lunch boxes.

High school teachers come out ok on materials, but middle and elementary teachers often do not get enough supplies allocated to them at school and have to go out of their own pocket.
I have no problem with people trying to do the best possible job they can.

Funny, it’s kind of the opposite in our district.
Elementary pretty much gets what they want, high school gets a bit less, and middle school is allocated the scraps. I teach 7th and 8th grade history so they barely know I’m alive. I kind of like it that way though, I do my own thing and admin leaves me alone.
Some teachers go way overboard on their rooms, and honestly the kids get distracted by it all. I keep my room pretty basic.

I'm with you on this one, cbree. We did just fine in the 70s and 80s with students supplying their OWN damned paper, pens, pencils, etc. Have schools now gone to the point that freaking everything is handed out to the kids? No wonder education has gone to hell in a handbasket - everyone wants everything GIVEN to them by someone else, or by someone "more fortunate."
If the kids' families would provide their own necessary materials the teachers wouldn't have to beg for classroom materials.
And... If teachers are adding so many things to the curriculum that require more paste, more scissors, more construction paper, and so forth and so on, maybe they need to reevaluate what it is that they are teaching.
The wish lists are starting to pop up with the frequency of Go Fund Me pages.
(Note the down votes that accrue at the bottom right of this post. That'll tell you how many folks here take no responsibility for the success of their children and want the state and their neighbors to provide them with everything free of charge.)

The take that teachers go to professional development to learn the latest from Pearson or Scholastic is laughable. Like I said, only the idiots do that. Or learn about AVID. Give me a fricking break. The best teachers close their doors and teach. They don’t jump through hoops identifying how students learn best. Yada yada.
