As most of us already know, Columbus was a murderous and vindictive tyrant who was selling 10 year old girls into sexual slavery, etc.

So, technically, he was the first Hollywood actor?

Indeed, I didn't intend to imply otherwise. In fact those diseases were a huge factor in the conquest of the Aztec and Inca, making Spain the world power of the time.

That smells like total bullshite along with most of the estimates of native numbers during those days.

Christopher Columbus was not a great man. He did not discover anything. He simply landed on an area that was already inhabited, and proceeded to enslave or kill the natives off so that he could call the land his own.

Some things, such as murder, rape, and slavery should never be ok. No matter what time period. Treating people as though they are less than a human for no reason at all should have never been acceptable.

Just because everyone around you is doing something doesnr make it right.

He discovered the New World for the crown of Spain, and a good chunk of the entire planet. Now we can debate if the Vikings beat him to it, but until Columbus, Europe and Asia had no knowledge of the new world.

and proceeded to enslave or kill the natives

He did this, but his impact was nothing compared to the diseases that he and other explorers brought. It's disingenuous to attribute the eradication of the natives as solely his fault, or goal.

He discovered it for Europe. He discovered new lands for them to conquer and expand to. He discovered new trade routes.

What do people expect would've happened if Columbus had not found the New World? Would the Indians still be living in their fake peaceful society today?

No. Someone else would've discovered it and been just as vicious and the same result or worse would've happened.

Irrelevant. It was acceptable, and widespread. And had been going on since the dawn of man.

You mean like the multiple waves of people coming over the land bridge from Asia that subsequently wiped out the current native population?

The "first peoples" of North America aren't even the first peoples. The true first peoples were conquered thousands of years ago.

When he was made a holy day, it was perceived as balm to Italians, who were scorned as honorary black people by high society.

As for the Spanish I had the disgusting task of reading Latin American history, 1 and 2.

The church was responsible for the attitude. Men were responsible for stealing gold.
their use of force against less well armed native populations was not questioned.

When the Klingons and Gikg6s show up in the "New world" hope they abide by the cultural non interference code.

I never said it did. I just don't judge someone who lived over 600 years ago by today's standards. We've progressed as a society.

It's like judging a child's actions by adult standards. The child is wrong, but the child has not matured enought to understand why it's wrong.

TBH I'm fine with a broad brush in elementary school. Get into the nuances later.

Columbus was an ogre, but he was a man of his times. Honorable people are the exception in any era. People 500 years from now will probably think our heroes were shitty human beings, and they'll probably be right.
