re: What's the worst you've ever messed up at work?

It was a local government job I worked while in college. I was in the permits and building inspection department but we were also responsible for dealing with locating property owners who has property that was not cared for or any type of issues involving the clean-up of extreme cases of people who didn't mow grass and had shite all over their yard..

Sometimes we would get calls from people who were complaining about a neighbor just because them and their neighbor didn't get along. One time there was this husband and wife who would call all the time. Although the neighbor didn't have the cleanest place it was by no means extreme and there was no way the parish could take legal action (because it wasn't a threat to the community). The inspector decided he would go out and talk with the neighbor just to see if he would just straighten up a little bit so the husband & wife would stop calling several times a day, every day. That did nothing but made the situation worse and one day the wife called and just started bitching.

Before we could do anything to a property we had to notify the property owner via certified letter giving them so many days to clean up before taking action.. When the wife called and started bitching and bitching I had enough of it so I typed up a letter that basically told them to stop acting like children and to work the situation out themselves because there is nothing more we could do and that they were wasting everyone's time calling multiple times every day. I put that bitch on the letterhead and sent it certified so I would know they got the letter. When they received the letter they threw a fit. They called the parish president and told him they felt like they were being treated like "the bad guys" since a certified letter was sent to them, etc. They made a huge deal out of it. He called me in his office and was pissed off at first, mainly because I put the letter on the parish letterhead, but I explained to him for over a month they have been calling multiple times a day. The neighbor's land had been inspected and their was nothing we could do, it was pretty much a feud between two neighbors and one of them decided to call the parish hoping they would force their neighbor to do something he refused to do. He laughed at it then said "but seriously, don't ever do that shite again without telling the inspector first and if you do, don't send it certified and don't print on parish letterhead.. these people vote for me".

Fricked a co-worker. Bad part was that many people found out at work - including her boyfriend. Embarrassing to say the least.

Lifeguard in college. The other lifeguard was female and a smokeshow. While I was running my game on her, some dipshit 10 year old dove headfirst into the shallow end. He seemed fine but his patents claimed he had a concussion and he spent the night in the hospital.

When I used to be a machinist, I was machining Inconel seal grooves for ANSI 2500 sub sea ball valves. Tolerance was +/- .0005". Was reading the ID mic incorrectly and cut 6 of them in a 12 hours shift .005" over.

Had to gouge them out, get a welder to inlay the carbon steel with the Inconel again and start over.

After I finished fixing it I got a free 3 day vacation that cost me the exact same amount I normally made in 3 days.

In college I had a decent part time government job that I really didn't give two shits about. I was full in to the drinking 5-6 nights a week, and on about the 15th time I clocked in late they fired my arse.

Learned my lesson, except for the drinking part.

Yeah that wasnt my brightest moment but its a situation I can definitely talk about at safety meetings.

In college my sister got a job at the university book store like 3 days before classes start. Her first shift as a cashier was the day classes started, one of the busiest days of the year. I think she did like $18,000 in sales or something.

She came in exactly $20 over in cash. Everyone acts like its no big deal.

Shows up to work the next day, boss said they had to let her go. Dumbest firing I've ever heard.

I forgot to lock down the cell block one night and El Chapo escaped.
