link us to the circumcission error rate in the United States? How prevalent are we talking? 1 in 500? 1 in 1000? 1 in 10000?

It’s small. But I think the point is do you want to be the botched one, when it’s not necessary.
The argument is if it’s not a necessary procedure and there are risks, why would you do it?

This is the same kind of argument anti-vaxers use. It isn’t a purely cosmetic procedure. There are benefits, even if it’s unnecessary.
I don’t have strong feelings either way, and left the decision to my husband. Three of my FIL’s friends had to have circumcisions as adults, so that sealed it for him.

Every year doctors botch millions of procedures. An infinitesimally small percentage of those botched procedures are circumcisions. Unnecessary doesn't mean unhelpful or unuseful. We do many much riskier things that aren't necessary because they improve our quality of life.
Sure. But what’s the risk of not doing one?

The topic always reminds me of a Louisiana malpractice case from the 80s. Little Jeffrey was 2. He lost his penis but got $2,750,000. From the court decision:
In late January 1984 Jeffery's parents noticed that he complained of pain when he urinated and that the foreskin of his penis had difficulty retracting. He was examined by a physician and his condition was diagnosed as phimosis. Circumcision surgery was recommended, and Jeffery was admitted to Moss Regional Hospital. ...
Dr. Glass instructed Dr. Goodger to perform a circumcision technique known as the guillotine technique. In this technique the foreskin of the penis is stretched past the end of the penis and clamped with a hemostat to hold the foreskin in a position to be cut off. After the excess foreskin is cut away, the bleeding is controlled and the edges of the foreskin are sutured together. Generally the cutting in circumcisions is performed with a scalpel.
Dr. Goodger, under the supervision of Dr. Glass, was instructed to cut the foreskin with a cutting instrument known as the Valleylab Electrosurgical Unit, known as an ESU. This unit operates by applying a high frequency electrical current through a “surgical pencil” to the cutting area. The electronic cut of the ESU reduces bleeding at the cutting area and eliminates the necessity of “tying-off” the vessels.
The unit has two modes: cut and coagulation. The surgery in the present case was begun in the cut mode on a setting of one on the power dial, and raised to two-and-one-half when the initial setting failed to make a cut. Dr. Glass instructed Dr. Goodger to cease cutting after he had cut approximately one-third of the distance across the foreskin. Dr. Glass observed that something was wrong because the penis had retracted and was very pale. Dr. Glass then became aware that the penis had sustained a full thickness burn. The ESU never touched the clamp during the surgery. The record is clear the penis was burned by excess electrical current running through the penis. Dr. Glass then removed the rest of the foreskin with scissors and sutured it by hand. A burn ointment, Silvadene, was applied to the burned area.
On February 8, 1984 the child was sent home. ... Eventually his external penile tissue sloughed away leaving him with no visible penile tissue. Put in simpler terms, his penis was gone.

If virtue signaling via your children’s genitals are your things, then by all means let a fraction of a decimal point error rates stand in your way

whatever you do...make the decision once and stick with it.
My wife has an anti-vax friend. Somewhere between son 1 and 3 not circumcising became the cool thing to do in her mom blog world. so she has one son that is circumcised and two that aren't.

It's not just Medicare. Our insurance refused to pay saying it was a religious practice. The hospital would not tell us how much it would cost, but that we could make monthly payments to lower the burden. I really hate the current US healthcare system.

Women overwhelming prefer circumcision.

In the overwhelming majority of studies, women expressed a preference for the circumcised penis. The main reasons given for this preference were better appearance, better hygiene, reduced risk of infection, and enhanced sexual activity, including vaginal intercourse, manual stimulation, and fellatio.

I don’t want to mutilate my children so that they can fit in.
You do it like the day after they're born and they cry for about 5 minutes and it heals in a week or two. It's not traumatic nor is it mutilation.
It helps keep it cleaner and has lower disease rates, which is the entire reason it started historically. It isn't to "look normal" for girls, that is just lagniappe.

So, essentially it's significantly safer for both the male and his female partner for him to be circumcised.
You'll insist someone in Poccatello, Idaho wear 35 masks to protect a wino/junkie on the streets of SanFran but refuse to snip your kid to protect a local cheerleader in a few years.

#1 - So when he gets some chick to play with it she's not grossed out
#2 - So when he has to shower at sports everyone doesn't laugh at him
So he's normal and like everyone else
