My $300-$400 tissot or sieko will look the same from a far. Seems like a waste to drop more than $500 on watch, especially in today’s age of cellphones and smart watches

Do you know where you are? Why don't you edit the thread title to "I'm poor"

what's the point of buying (insert expensive material object nobody actually needs)?

the answer is the same. because that person wants to. next question.

Agreed.

Computer monitor, cell phone, DVR, etc. all let me know what time it is.

It's either a hobby or a status symbol. Or both.

Pops got it for 20 years at his company. Gave it to me since he’s retired and doesn’t need a nice watch anymore.

What's the point of wearing anything but sweats or driving cars that aren't base model toyotas?

Nice watches are cool. I happen to think Rolex look a bit strange with their wide lugs, and since I don’t do bracelets I’ll probably never own one. I’d take a Blancpain or other nice watches though. I could see dropping $10k on a watch if I really liked it. I’d wear that thing every day too.

Rolex's appreciate in value, so you could buy a $7k Rolex and wear it for 5 years and make money on it.

Oh, and:

Rolex's are a bit north of $500.

I’ve probably made much worse purchases than a nice watch but for the life of me I’ll never understand the appeal of buying a nice watch.
