Time is a flat circle. Watches are pointless.

Seems like a waste to drop more than $500 on watch,

My friend who’s a jeweler said the whole “watch” thing started with a certain group so they could tell each other apart and see who was available but now that those people can be more open in society and get married nobody wears watches anymore

My $300-$400 tissot or sieko will look the same from a far.

Well, to the other poors, it will. We'll spot it from the cabins of our G6s cruising at 40,000 feet while the stewardess is giving us a blowie.

Used cheapest model, gold and stainless band, $5k or less.

They're cool to have, and they last. Heirlooms that are passed down tend to be respected more by following generations if they have legitimate/inherent as well as sentimental value. There are also more resources for maintaining/restoring valuable things than simple things nobody intends to last decades.

It's a harder call to pour money into restoring a painting or a watch where the restoration will far exceed the value of the restored thing. That's not necessarily the case with nicer things.

It's not a value proposition, I'm not saying it's worth the money to originally purchase or to maintain, but I get it and I'm glad we have some stuff like that in our family and I'll probably try to do at least some of the same going forward.

Yeah, about as much as anything else you plan on reselling.

Grandfather was a poor Italian immigrant, bought one when he made it, gave to father

Father bought one when he retired, gave me both when he passed

I bought mine the day after my fathers funeral. My son will have three.

And that’s what makes it cool. Not all of us are guidos looking to shine up the place.
