re: Whats the point of buying a Rolex?

The answer to your question is because you can... Same with driving a car: a Ford and a Jaguar will get you from point A to Point B the same, but a Jag can be 5-10 times more $$ than a Ford.
Rolex watches are classic, excellent craftsmanship, and durable... I have a simple Datejust stainless steel, simple everyday wear watch.
There are, however, some Rolex watches that are too bling'ed out that looked a little silly. My uncle has an 18K yellow-gold Rolex with diamonds around the bezel... So ostentatious that it looked fake and the thing is so heavy to be practical.

Why single out Rolex? What is the point of buying anything other than a $50 Casio? No need for a Seiko either.

Not at all. My point is that I don't care what you spend your money on at all - I just can't fathom spending $10K on a watch. There's a lot of shite that I can think of spending $10K on other than a watch. And simply - that I don't use public transportation.

My Rolex has been on my wrist just about every day for the last 35 years. It’s by far the longest lasting item I’ve owned that I use every day. And it is still as accurate today as it was when I first acquired it.
The only times it has been off my wrist was when I succeeded in shattering the custom stone dial and it had to go back to Switzerland to be repaired and when I sent it to a well known jeweler in Hong Kong to have the band tightened.
Do I need it absolutely not, but in terms of value for money considering the duration, I think it’s a long step ahead of your smartwatch that will probably be rendered obsolete by an Apple iOS update well before it reaches 35 years.

To have something to fork over when you're getting held up at gunpoint in the french quarter.

Isn’t wearing a watch a safety violation down at the plant baw? Some things have value to professionals that you blue collar people will never understand.

Certain ones are portfolio pieces, especially stainless steel professional models (Sumariner/Seadweller family, GMTs, Daytonas) these days. If you are fortunate enough to walk into a dealer, see one and have them sell it to you, you may very well have instant equity, depending upon the reference. If you have a connection at an out of state dealer that you've purchased from before, you may even be able to acquire one without sales tax, and you have even more pronounced instant equity. With your garden variety datejusts, oyster perps, day dates, etc the buyer will take a depreciation hit, then stabilize and hold value quite handily compared to other brands.
Take for instance a simple stainless steel 16610 submariner date - say you purchased one 30 years ago it would've cost you about $1800 - reasonably cared for can easily bring $7500 and up and it's not even be hard to find a buyer. That handily out paces inflation, and that's just one example.
And I do understand that a cellphone, computer etc tells time with near perfect accuracy and precision, but in a few years these things will be sitting in a landfill somewhere as opposed to being passed down to someone.
There are not many luxury watches that can be investment pieces, and even fewer brands where non-precious metal models or models without intricate complications can be a decent part of one's portfolio, but Rolex is a brand that actually can achieve this, but like anything else, it does require some knowledge of what one is getting into.

So you can tell which rich OT-er has a wife at home getting the BBC.

It is a fine watch no doubt, but you are paying for the status symbol. Other brands make similar quality at a lower price point, but they do not fetch a premium or advertise at the rate that Rolex does.
Watch a major golf or tennis tournament on tv or a sailing event. You will see Rolex plastered all over.

Rolex is about brand recognition and nothing more. There are better watches on the market.

which is more than $500. I think OP is saying $500 seems like the ceiling for buying a watch not the price of a Rolex.
