Yeah you could do 24/4 or 6x1 and it's the same.
You could even dare to do the addition first, and still get 11
This is where the argument will come from. Someone is going to come in here and say, "Duh, you add first. That's what I did and got 11. And my calculator and google says it's 11. So obviously I'm right."

Does your child happen to attend a Baltimore Public School?

There are multiple incorrect ways to evaluate this expression and still end up with 11.
The only way I am seeing it could possibly be something other than 11 is if you went full retard and did:
(5+6x4)/4 which would be 29/4.
Maybe the teacher is trying to argue that everything on either side of the "/" gets evaluated separately, then once you have those numbers you evaluate again?

That's what I was thinking too. There's no way to get any other answer that I can see. I'm sure there are creative people on this board who will though.
In APL it's something entirely different:
5+6×4/4
29 29 29 29

11. Same score you got on your ACT.
I got a 38. I’m better than you.
OT goes crazy.

Unless you're coding for a computer, that setup is stupid. A person with a brain would use parentheses to avoid confusion.

Unless parentheses aren't needed.

Lets try common core on it.
12 bananas - 15 oranges x 37 sexual relations with students = a great post on the OT

Who said PEMDAS had to be the rule?
Does this date back to the early Greek days, like Pythagoras?

"The OT is stupid" is the answer you're looking for.

The correct way to write the problem is to use parentheses to make it obvious. Your kid should have rejected the problem on that basis.
