Not if you're testing the child's knowledge of order of operations.

PEMDAS is arbitrary so I guess they can change it, which sort of defeats purpose of math.

What a horrible homework problem. Doesn't teach kids anything about PEMDAS since it doesn't matter what order you chose to take. If anything this will only confuse the kids even more. Is the teacher at least hot?

PE(MD)(AS) is actually more accurate, where the multiplication and division order don’t matter, but do come before addition and subtraction. The teacher’s problem seems to see if the student knows this...not sure what’s so complicated here...

Brackets (parts of a calculation inside brackets always come first).
Orders (numbers involving powers or square roots).
Division.
Multiplication.
Addition.
