Everyone is a victim these days. If you are a victim it is not your fault and you are entitled to sympathy and and the bogus rewards that come with that victimhood. No self accountability.

I find that on the things society has evolved on (race and gender equality) - a percentage of society tries way too hard to overcompensate as an answer. And that percentage of society is growing year to year.
It was a scar on the face of man that at one time we actually had slaves. So what is our answer today? Let's engage in guilt even though we had nothing to do with that. Let's completely wipe out any reference of history that took place during those times (statues, faces on currency, etc.). And let's actually make up a fallacious issue and call it "white privilege".
This country is in need of major economic overhaul and is still engaged in a 15 year war in which there is no victory. What is our answer? Let's elect the first woman president "just because". Gender equality. We'll even throw in the antithesis of Clinton as Trump, for dramatic effect to please the reality tv crowd.
And of course, the social media crowd as everyone else talked about is right there to fuel it all.
