St bernard is really remarkable for how *physically* close it is to NO but how *mentally* far. In most cities that would be an inner ring suburb completely indistinguishable from any of the other areas "just outside of town." But somewhere like violet may as well be a different planet from Metairie

There’s nothing there. It got leveled by Katrina and is now just an extension of the 9th ward.

Also, I had high hopes for Rocky and Carlo’s but it was terrible. Just mushy slop that they called gumbo. Quite an embarrassment, but I guess that’s all they have there?

If you went to Rocky’s and didn’t get the Mac and cheese with veal, all covered in the red gravy, then you didn’t really go to Rocky’s.

It used to be heavenly.
It’s a different place post-Katrina.
I’m glad I got to grow up there in the ‘70s/‘80s.

She's dead now.

Pre Katrina it was definitely one of the most unique places in the U.S. imo.

Very Jersey Shore douche vibe in a lot of ways. Lots of juiced up dudes with gelled hair, trashy tattoos, etc. The chicks were honestly pretty hot but trashy.

Bud Light probably made more money per capita than any place in the country.

But it was also, as others said, relatively safe and good people overall.

No idea what it's like today. Everyone I knew that lived there moved to the North Shore.

For real I didn’t even know Rocky’s had gumbo.

My brother lived there. I can't fathom living there, but people from "The Parish" truly love it. I can't find anything positive about it.

I take that back. Rocky and Carlos is pretty damn good.

You can take the girl out of Chalmette, but you can’t take the gum out of her mouth.

It's gritty and industrial. Nothing fancy in Chalmette. But it has a strong sense of community and good food.

I know three people that I work or worked with that grew up there. All talk as if it was heaven on Earth, but none live there and all left as young adults.

Couldn’t say, but seemed okay when I saw Megadeth at the St Bernard Parish Cultural Center in 90/91
