Also, I had high hopes for Rocky and Carlo’s but it was terrible. Just mushy slop that they called gumbo. Quite an embarrassment, but I guess that’s all they have there?
Getting gumbo there is like getting chicken nuggets at a steakhouse.

Low crime… sheriff is probably the closest thing to Harry Lee, just not as well known.
Schools are good if your kid is smart or wants to be involved.
Middle schools have sports teams.
High school has probably the best performing arts center in southeast LA if not the state. Outstanding theater arts program. Great band and music. Cheer and dance teams that compete nationally.
Tons of AP programs and dual enrollment at Nunez. Over a dozen kids are graduating high school tonight with a high school degree AND an associates degree. My oldest is leaving high school with 28 hours of college credit.
What sucks: lack of retail. Need a decent grocery store. Breaux mart is meh. Need to go to Slidell to buy most things.
Housing and prop tax is decent although insurance is awful
Oh, and a cheer gym owner was just arrested for indecent behavior with a juvenile

It’s not “The Parish”, it’s “ Da Parish”
Da Parish is how dumb yats say it… I want Chalmette to grow out of that and join respectable, educated civilization, like Metairie where I grew up… or maybe even the Northshore
But what I like about the parish is just how diverse its environments are, from basically a city neighborhood with views of the river and NOLA skyline in Old Arabi, a suburb in Chalmette, an exurb in Meraux, rural tree-lined highways down the road, and the fishing villages at the end of the roads… it feels like an enclave where normal laws don’t apply

That's the spirit. Hate the Rebel Playground people.....
But then in the parking lot the Dad's and coaches were popping the lids on beers.

Grew up in Chalmette... Graduated high school and went off to LSU at roughly the same time as Katrina and I never moved back.
When I lived there I couldn't wait to grow up and move away to some "civilized" place, but in retrospect pre-Katrina Chalmette was a great place to live and if things ever magically went back to the way they were, I'd be very happy to live there.
Others have mostly covered it, but the schools were great, it was safe, it was suitable to raise a family and have your kids roam the neighborhood, it was close to NOLA, French Quarter, etc. you had a good split between suburban Arabi/Chalmette/Meraux and more rural Violet/Poydras, etc., great fishing, etc.
Only downside was having to go to Metairie, Kenner, or the East (before it and the Plaza mall went to shite) for retail shopping, but that's not that far and we had everything we really needed.
As for now.... When I visit, it feels weird, because I'm in places that I would have felt completely safe all my life before, but they are fricked up bizarro ghetto versions of themselves.

Given what Chamatians have done to the northshore, I assume it’s a shithole.

I want to make the parish Metry. No one makes jokes about them and I don’t see many trailer parks. Probably less pdfs too

I moved back to Arabi 4 years ago. I grew up here and left for LSU in '98. Moved to Algiers in 2013 then finally back to Arabi in 2022.
1) Yes, it's different.
2) Yes, it's probably one of the safest parish's this state has.
3) The Chalmation accent is almost extinct. It's kind of depressing. If you're 40-ish and over it's still alive and well. If you're 35-ish and younger you don't sound like you're from here. It's wild. I noticed it at the Tomato Fest this year hanging with my people.
4) There are more and more young, professional families moving here due to tons of new construction being relatively affordable. My street has some plant baws, engineers, a few attorneys and 2 doctors.
It has it's faults and some parts are unrecognizable to people who grew up here but it's still a pretty nice spot to raise a family. Very community oriented. One of the best Rec systems I've seen. The government seems to give a shite about it's people. I have no complaints since moving back home.

I don’t know about that, but I do know that the Camaro and the Firebird were kept in production for at least 5-10 years past the date they should’ve been canceled almost entirely due to Chalmette.

My grandparents lived down there when I was a kid. I used to spend a lot of time down there in the 70s, especially in the summers. I got to know a lot of the kids who lived around my grandparents. And there were A LOT of kids! We used to play cabbage ball in the street or even go down the block to the field behind Saint Mark's and play baseball or football.
The one thing that I was a little jealous of was that Da Parish really did seem to have an incredible recreation department with tons of really dedicated and involved coaches. One summer I even thought about playing baseball down there using my grandparents address (I would’ve been a Rebel Park Raider).
Post Katrina, I can’t imagine that the athletic department is nearly as robust.

Everything you said was dead on.
In other words, Meraux and Violet now as opposed to 25 years ago.
Going through there recently was shocking, to say the least. Don't even think village square was that bad back in the day.

I can confirm it is, at least until travel ball age…
Then all the middle schools have their league too
Now we’ll be back in the Catholic League, and I won’t promise we’ll win much, but hopefully it keeps some of our talent in the parish.
