re: What's behind racial differences in restaurant tipping?

I tip based on quality of service. I recognize that 15% to 20% is the general standard for tipping on good service.
That said, good service is the key word for me.
If you give me good service I will gladly tip 18-20% or more. If you do not, then I won't.
I am especially sensitive to this because like most married posters on here with small kids it is an event to be able to go eat with my wife without the kids.
Maybe a year ago, we went out to a restaurant my wife wanted to try. The service was horrible. The server ignored us the whole time. When our glasses were empty he never came to refill them. I eventually had to go up to the bar to get a refill. He was standing around talking to other servers. He watched me do this, then came over and asked if we needed a refill. Also, he some how managed to only put my wife's order in even though we ordered at the same time.
To be fair, he probably was just incompetent, but regardless, i'm not tipping 20% or at all to not be served. I have definitely had some servers who wanted no part of us because we black though.

Get rid of the concept of tipping.
I remember leaving a tip at my first European meal and the server being more put off than thankful...The Navy was more worried about us screwing everything in site than teaching us local customs

That's not something white folks typically do
Maybe not a family of 7, but in my server experience I never saw a noticible difference in meal splitting between the races and I would guess roughly 40% of all people only order water.
Now table lemonade is definitely a predominantly black thing.

At your average restaurant, sure
At Olive or Twist, Walk Ons, Rum House, etc no.

Race-based service discrimination not only compromises black peoples’ typical dining experiences, but also renders restaurants vulnerable to costly litigation and undermines their bottom line by discouraging black patronage.
If the sort of people that don’t tip well are discouraged from coming to your establishment, it encourages the patronage of those that do tip well.

I'm 100% with you on this

100% sure that this does happen

Crazy enough this does not carry over into tipping in casinos as much. Definitely not in the the poker room. Regular table games, it's there but not as pronounced.

I have to agree here.
Again not that easy. Profit margins as a whole are not great so paying servers more will increase the price of the meal.

the solution is to pay servers a competitive wage
I'm all for the European model but you have to keep in mind that most servers like the current model. They can make more money that way.

That's just naive, but irrelevant as it will never happen in America.
a restaurant's meal prices in europe is pretty much on par with their relative counterparts here, and drinks cost less... over there, tipping is not compelled and their servers receive a full wage.

Yet, black churches and black charities receive TONS of financial support from the black community. So I don't believe it is an issue of not being able to afford a nicer tip.
And like others have said... it's not like black diners are making it rain for black servers but stiffing white servers.
I just think they don't believe in the system that a server should get most of their income from tips. And I don't say I blame them. However, because I know how the system works, I comply.

You're correct on both counts. The article mentions that income of the patron and race of the server were controlled for in multiple studies

You'd end up closer to Europe with the culture of a having a 3 hour dinner as 2 servers try to operate the whole room, and no option to start said dinner before 7PM (with all restaurants closed between 2PM and 7PM).

I think the concept here is that a great restaurant doesn't serve lunch
