growing up around whites and fitting in among black people has been mine. except for my family, the closest people to me have mostly been white. i can't remember one time when any of my white friends made me feel inferior or did something truly racist. but i can tell you plenty of times black kids made fun of my accent, dress, etc. i don't think any of them realized the impact it had, and i didn't either for a long time. i internalized that stuff and let it bring me down. eventually i learned to let it go and no longer have the need to identify with a group outside of my friends and family.

As a black man, trying to fit into a largely white population in my area. It takes people a while to accept you.

Definitely the long slow burn of my excruciatingly slowly deteriorating marriage, finishing law school, lengthy divorce process, my dog’s long battle with cancer, living with my parents as an adult, extra long wait to take the bar, job search, and the continued daily battle with the urge to kill myself out of a combination of self-loathing, hopelessness, fear, impatience, and sheer boredom.

I buried my son. Everything else in life I have experienced has been gravy.

Being unemployed for most of my 20’s working National Guard part time and volunteering for missions to make money. No one would hire me mainly due to the probability of me being called up and the recession. On top of that my sister died in a freak accident when I was 23 and everyone my age from College was 10 years ahead of me in lifestyle wise.

But now in my 30s and starting strong in a niche industry as a PM in Commercial Glazing. Soon I will retire from the Louisiana Army National Guard, married and hopefully a kid down the road.

Reminds me of the saying “Fast is slow, and Slow is Fast”.
