I was headed to NOLA from Baton Rouge to rehearse for 2 shows me and my band were going to play.

I saw the track and size of Katrina and backed out. This was the day my band broke up and we parted ways. My lead-singer and frontman of the band lived off St Charles. He evacuated and that was basically it. IT's a bittersweet moment for me because I left that lifestyle and started my path to what I really wanted my whole life, the wife and kids, house, american dream shite.

About this time I was on the Basin bridge headed to Houston with my gf, a dog, and a cat. I was hungover as all hell from the night before. The cat wigged out the entire trip. Packed enough clothes for 2 days. Stayed for 2 weeks.

East cape of Baja Mexico on a fishing trip. We were fairly isolated so we didn't hear about all the ruckus until the 29th. A local who knew my friend and I were from Louisiana drove 40 miles to give us the news. We had a sat phone but nobody bothered calling us which made me nervous so I called my dad who informed me my shitbird cousins that went to tulane were staying in my house and that their dog had chewed up my couch.

I had been married a month prior and was tired from working out of town that week and spending three weekends finishing up converting my double by City Park into a 4/2 single. I had heard a storm was coming but didn't really realize how big it was going to be and did not want to evacuate.

I did not realize it was that big of a deal until I was dropping my daughter off at the lakefront for cross country practice. There were gas lines on the way and it was all anyone was talking about. After listening to WWL for an hour, I knew we had to go. We left at 3AM Sunday.

A month after the storm, I started renovating again.

Standing in line at Circle K on State Street to buy a few cases of beer.

ETA: Or maybe that was the 28th? I don't remember. I remmeber seeing Easy Star All-Stars at HOB and then getting back to BR that night. Woke up Saturday to find we had barely gotten out before the evacuation was called.

I was in my 3rd year at LSU. I distinctly remember the evening heading back to my parents house, headed eastbound on I-10. Headlights for as far you could see coming at you and I was the lone vehicle headed towards New Orleans the entire drive. One of the strangest and most surreal experiences I've had.

One week before Katrina hit, I was at a weekend meeting in the Gulfport/Bay St. Louis area.

I went out on the beach for just 2 hrs one day and the wind and the surf were as serene as I've ever seen it.

Could not have imagined the destruction that was to come from beyond the horizon.

On the 28th resting at brother-in-laws house after a 9 hour drive to Houston.
