Probably waking up from being drunk the night before and getting ready to batten down the hatches at everyone's houses. Filling up fuel cans. Stocking up on food

Pretty sure I was taking 4 hours to get from Lafayette to my parents' home. Normally a 40 min drive up I-49.

Was awakened by a phone call that AM from my wife's friend freaking out that Katrina was a Cat 5 and heading for LA. Within 15 minutes, we had the vehicle packed and she and my two children (both under 5) headed to north LA to stay with family. I guided her up the back way to Alec via cell phone and she got on 49 from there. I stayed with the pets and watched the house.

On I10 on the way to San Diego. Had not listened to the radio since early that morning, was playing CDs all day. Stopped in Yuma, AZ for dinner, in the diner there was a TV with CNN on covering the cluster that was the evacuation. When I had left NOLA early the morning before they were still forecasting Katrina to go well east of NOLA.
But, San Diego was a great place to hole up after the storm, as my house in Lakeview was flooded. Went back to NOLA once in October for a week to throw all the ruined shite out of my house and went back to work in Southern California until March of 2006.

The 27th was saturday right? I was packing up 3 days worth of clothes in my new dorm room. About to start my first year of college. Got a teammate's mom to drop me off at my aunt's house where I was going to keep my car (freshman weren't allowed) before they headed to the airport. Drove back to BR where I stayed until January.

Waking up in Shell Beach with a hangover after celebrating our senior ring mass the night before. Last time our entire class would be together, even we reopened our class was down a ton of people.

Was at Home Depot at 5:00 a.m. buying wood to board up the house to keep the mold in. Made sure I cleaned out the gutters really well.
Boy would I like to have that day over again.

Literally was trying to explain to my clueless boss living in Houston that this was going to be a huge deal that would impact our gulf coast business for months.
About a week later I'm on the phone with him listening to him say what a genius he thought I was for predicting what actually happened.

Somewhere underwater between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Aden. I didn't even know about the hurricane until about a week and a half after it hit.

Two weeks before Katrina hit we had forty or so people staying at the Baronne Plaza for my divorce party. Had an awesome night at Howl at the moon. Life was grand. No idea my whole life was about to change.....

I was also trying to get my in-laws to evacuate from lakeview. Convinced them to do so at the 11th hour. The only part of their house not underwater was the tip of the roof. Emotionally, they never recovered.

We stayed up watching reports throughout the night. At about 3-4am we woke up and saw the size and strength of the storm and finished packing up with the quickness. Left my parent's home south of Belle Chasse around 5am headed for Baton Rouge. Took like 11 hours that day to get to Baton Rouge.
That was a crazy time for sure. I had a brother stay back in Gretna to ride out the storm in the family business. Tornadoes took the roof off of it while he was in it. He moved to his truck and rode it out in the truck.
Had a grandfather and 2 uncles ride the storm out in Pillotown (south of Venice,LA). We never heard from them for almost 2 weeks when the coastguard picked them up. His house was gone (along with most of the houses on the island) and he rode it out on the 3rd story of the pilot station. They had water splashing into the 3rd story through the windows that broke and the surge had been picking the station up and pounding it into the mud. The pilings to the station were about at a 45-60 degree angle (compared to the ground) after the storm. He was lucky to survive.

Ten years ago today I was trying to get my Mom to evacuate but she insisted on going to Mass the next morning.
Ten years ago from tomorrow I spent seven-and-a-half hours driving from NOLA to Baton Rouge (normally a ninety minute drive) as part of a sixteen hour drive to Houston (normally a five-and-a-half hour drive.)
