My parents were in New Orleans for a taping of Wheel of Fortune. They canceled the episodes for the 27th. Around 10am classes were canceled for Monday at LSU and I went to Mobile to help them. Traffic was non existent.

Driving through fields between Baton Rouge and Bunkie trying to get to my parents house. Traffic was baaaaad so I just took a bunch of dirt roads to get to Hwy 1 and then it was relatively easy to get home.

Several weeks after Katrina we kept our plans to go to Vegas because things couldn't possibly get worse. Cue hurricane rita and the last flight through texas landing in Jackson Miss with drive home trying to keep the suv on the road.

I was in Tennessee at the time, but family was in LA still. Mom headed north to the grandparents place near Leesville. Aunt and cousins were in Galveston and also headed to the grandparents. I remember being happy I was in TN at the time but also feeling guilty that my family was going through this.

I was wondering how my parents were doing running the shelter.

I was in college with only a set of sheets and a book. I was allowed to move into the dorms a week early.

Cancelled my mini vacation on our Mississippi gulf coast and getting my house ready and the generator up and going. Which was needed badly here.
A very crazy time.

Prepping the BR house to become a refugee camp. Canceling my 21st bday plans to go to Biloxi casinos the following week. Crazy times when I think about it.

<---Buying ice, helping family prep...

I never lost power at my place in BR, I had about 40 people over the night after the storm. Some friends from NO stayed for over 2 months, I went with a few of them the in the first days they let people back into the city, That is something I will never forget.

Sitting at my Mom's house in North Alabama, watching the TV.
My arse evacuated, the little shack I had rented at Mobile got destroyed, along with some junk I left behind.

I was working at Bender Shipyard at that time, and the OIL rig that I was working on, broke loose, and blew up the river and hit the Afrikatown Bridge.

Totally destroyed that thing, I heard 80 million in damage, dont know for sure.

I saw that shite on CNN and told my MOM, "there goes My Job" But I was wrong. I made a lot of money on the cleaning up part.

I was playing taxi for a bunch of my Quarter Rat friends. Shuttled a couple groups of them to the Northshore before helping my parents board up their place in Slidell. My Dad was still recovering from back surgery so I got a lot of practice on the table saw that evening.

"Dad - I thought we had plywood cut for the windows already."

"Well... We did... but we hadn't needed it in so long - I fixed my ottoman, layed some down in the attic, etc...

Drove out sore as frick the next morning around just as the leading bands were starting to approach.

Has Pearlington "come back" since the storm? I just realized I hadn't driven that route to Mississippi since and was curious.

I have some piers there, and a slab where the driveway was.

Bunch of people rebuilt homes. Fishing camps, not as much.

Was at work getting educated on our emergency service function (ESF) which turned out to be search and rescue.

Personally, had already laid in supplies for landfall. Had 4 120 quart icechests ready to fill with ice which I did by the end of that day. Picked up a new grill on the way home from work which I assembled during landfall.
