That may be true for some, but there are a lot more examples of people who fricked around their first semester or two and either got on academic probation or close to it, then straightened out their act and made excellent grades after that. Their GPA will always be dragged down by that first couple of semesters, but it's pretty clear they were capable the whole time but just didn't do their best.
Anyone in the 3.2 to 3.8 range whose best semesters were the last few probably can honestly say that if they cared more earlier theirs would have been higher.
The people limping in with a 2.5 who say that probably can't admit that they probably didn't have the chops to do much better.

And it has never once mattered.
And it has never once mattered.

In engineering it definitely matters. The guys who finished 3.8+ had 6 figure job offers when I was graduating. I was under 3.0 and still got plenty offers, but none were the caliber that the top of the class got.

I think all around between two degrees about a 2.9, but neither do I think really mattered. As long as you are competent and able to learn and adjust on the job who gives?

Coming straight out of school, disagree somewhat. It matters in that it typically needs to be above a certain threshold.
And there are different thresholds for different types of jobs, even in the same field.

4.0 until I got accepted into medical school. I then promptly got a B and gave zero shits. Started taking classes like social work where you color with crayons with athletes.

I honestly have no clue anymore. It matters for your first hire, maybe, and then it will never come up in your life again.
So many things people tell you are important while youre in college, you get it out and find out yea, it doesnt matter at all. Experience and production trumps all academic accolades save for your degree. You do need a degree at least to get anywhere.
So many kids get out of school and realize its hard to get a good job and hold it, and work is hard, so they go back to school to try to get better credentials to get that magic easy high paying job, then they end up in the same position behind the 8ball bc they wasted more years in school, and with much more debt. I hate dealing with and hiring people under 30, so much distortion to their reality.

For me, it mattered more for grad school than it did for employment.

A lot of people tell them self this. I have come to think that a probably subconscious compensation to protect their ego. They don't really try to protect themselves from the risk failing when you know you tried your best. Then you would have nowhere to hide from the reality that you really aren't as smart as you thought you were.
I always cared. So that wasnt my problem. I always was either working or wasted. Or both. Which led me to miss class. My shitty gpa is my fault, abouta 2.6. But I graduated in chemistry. And I know my shite now. Wish I tell my 21 year old self a few things. But thats life.

Or, maybe I was immature during undergrad and rarely studied more than the night before an exam
And, maybe I matured as I aged, thus the much better GPA in graduate school.
