Winn- Dixie, Sophomore year of high school. bag boy and buggy getter……would leave football practice to closing. I didn’t mind the buggy pushing as I was an offensive lineman, I would do that to work on blocking technique and foot work. Also, I was determined to get my bench numbers up…. Destrehan ‘03-04

Around age 10, I worked at our family grocery store. I swept the parking lot, mopped the floors stocked the shelves and ran the cash register. The hard liquor and cigs were on big shelves behind the counter. We would keep the popular booze like Jack Daniel's or MD 2020 on the lower shelves near the cartons of cigarettes so I could reach them.
Behind each row of liquor, Dad kept loaded pistols tucked away. On top of every beer cooler, we kept probably a dozen long handle guns.
Thankfully we never had to grab one of the guns. But, I was taught where all the guns were and what to do if I needed one.

McDonalds back when we gave a damn, made actual burgers, and the staff was polite and friendly.

During high school summers at 15-16 worked with a plumber who specialized in construction doing rough ins.
That worked sucked but I made $8 an hour cash when minimum wage was $5.50.
My dad loved getting me crappy, outside jobs in my youth.
It worked bc I stayed in school and got a cushy office job.

Piggly Wiggly in Bogalusa back in the 70s.

I mowed a few lawns and edged several others. I quickly learned that to edge a lawn where the grass has overgrown the sidewalks, burns through a lot of blades which cost more than I was getting paid. Weed eaters weren't around then.
Right out of high school I worked in a construction crew at a nursing home for the insane. Most of those there had been chained to walls at the state hospital in Jackson, LA before this.

I worked at a summer camp for girls that's on the same lake as our place in Northern Wisconsin. Started in the kitchen and working in the stables and worked my way up to water ski instructor and boat driver. So I sat in a boat on the water for 7 hours a day with a high school or college aged girl as the spotter. Used to party with them all at our place and in town/on the water. Didn't suck.

Mine was Winn Dixie as a freshmen in high school. Usually worked 3 days a week after school 6-7 hours each shift and then both Saturday and Sunday for 8-9 years each day.
Solid 30+ hours per week as a 14 year old.
Child Labor Laws were a lot different back in 1995, I think.
Same, except it was Kroger and I was 16. Every other detail is identical.
Cash money from tips for bagging groceries made me feel rich. You could make $60 on a busy Saturday. Cash money, not including your bi-weekly paycheck of minimum wage ($4.25).
Never had a shortage of money at the Mall on Friday nights procuring extracurricular things and a CD or two from the music store.

Worked at a newly opened lumber yard in 1978. Pulling orders; loading trucks. $2.65/hr. Worked 60 hr weeks in the summer. Loved time and a half pay. Purchased a six pack and 8 track tape when I got off work every Friday.

Same.
First job wasn't until the summer between graduating high school and starting college.
They sent me to work at the sugar mill our family runs.
Had to spray down cane trailers in the 100 degree heat. Would be soaking wet and covered in mud by noon. Chaffed like a MF.
After I finished that, got moved to working with electricians. Had to change out all the street lights and lights around the plant. frickers sent me up in the man lift with no harness.
