most of the neighborhoods you're probably referring to really just need to be razed

Lafayette is very diversified now from about 15-20 years ago. oil dump in 2014 and the politics in our state forced it.

we are now pretty healthcare and tech heavy.

sitting on the crossroads of two interstates doesn't hurt

Long term vision.

In general, Louisiana politics do a terrible job at that, always have, always will.

It's somewhat cultural as well. Breeds ideas like NIMBYs, chaotic political swings, and a more friendly welfare culture.

I would assert Baton Rouge was the decision to move LSU from directly adjacent to and north of downtown to its current location.

It was previously set up very similar to how Austin and UT are.

I'm not saying BR would have grown and developed similarly, but I can't help but think that the campus's distance from downtown was ultimately a big part of its demise.

I've always heard and read (Rising Tide mentioned it), that one issue with New Orleans was how insular society was there. Very much a you need to have been born here to get into the right clubs/krewes. Hard to attract large corporates if you tell the CEO he's not welcome in your club.

Of course, state and local political grifters probably played a much more significant role.

Houston on the other hand is a place that welcomes everyone and doesn't really care about your background or where you went to college/high school. Only what you've achieved.

I had Nashville first, but when I realized that Sun ended up building in Memphis, I changed it. But yeah- could have been either or both.

Houston = major port city

Laffayette = never could be a major port city

Laffayette could never be what Houston is.

They did it at gunpoint. A better option would have been not fighting integration tooth and nail and sticking with the public system instead of white flighting to Central, Livingston and Ascension.

Racial segregation and Jim Crow laws that (i) largely sidelined half the human capital of each city from economic participation and (ii) cause each city to build and maintain two parallel sets of schools, universities, parks, hospitals, etc.

Like that’s clearly the answer.

Louisiana is friendly, but you're not one of us unless you grew up there or lived there a really long time.

It all goes along with what I see every time I go home to N. La or to BR...I feel like I'm going back in time at least 20 years...probably more like 30. It's lifestyle, attitudes, everything. It's not just leadership. Hardly anyone in the state wants to go forward. Many people who live there still wish for the past and have a hard time with change. Look at Houston, Atlanta, Nashville...constantly changing and looking at new things. That reflects the attitudes of the people who live there, not just the govt officials.
