I feel like this is a never ending searching for me. I have tried to flip the script a bit within my own life by acknowledging the great things I have going for me: health (as far as I know), a healthy daughter, a good relationship, parents who can still get around.

I battle depression, but I think I’ve done a decent job of keeping that in check lately. I think lately, I’ve fallen short in my ability to get excited about much of anything. I’m like an NCP in a video game or an extra in a movie.

I don’t get too low, but I don’t get too high. I’ve been getting back to church, spending plenty of time outside. I can still get buried in a hobby. At the end of the day, I just tend to return to a level state. It’s similar to anhedonia I suppose, but I don’t feel miserable or upset.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m capable of doing something like climbing a mountain or jumping out of a plane to get my senses going. What inspires you guys?

So you reject the first thing you said? Heaven and hell represent good and bad. The existence of good and bad imply objective standards, objective truth and reality. By quantifying what define as good and bad, you define heaven and hell. Then you say there is none.

Pick one.

What is that reality? Is there good and bad in it?

To pursue my dreams, passions, and pleasures.
To try to become the best, most excellent version of myself.
To provide for those that I love (wife, children, family) so that they have the best opportunity to pursue their own dreams, passions, and pleasures.
To defend truth and goodness when given the chance.

Those four deceptively simple aims could consume every moment of the remainder of my days. Easy to say, extremely arduous to accomplish.

I am sorry you are grappling with depression. I contend with it myself. It is a vicious, elusive foe that can eradicate all joy and hope. I hope you find your way back to the light.

Nothing about being kind, generous, loving, or creating a good community has to be attributable to God, but if you feel the need, that’s on you, dude.

I didn’t say there is none. I said there probably isn’t one. And I never said anything about good or bad.
I’m not one to insult anybody online, but you’re reading way too much into what I typed.

I simply stated there is no definite purpose here in our existence but to be kind, generous, and help create a good community, cause this reality we experience collectively is prob all there is.

You believe in objective good, yes? Where did it come from?

There aren't enough accomplishments in the world to sustain any one person for a lifetime. Eventually, even the Clint Eastwoods, Skip Bertmans, Ronald Reagans, et al die. So, if one doesn't love fully while on earth or subscribe to an afterlife, there really is no fulfilling purpose.

I just fish and build furniture and cabinets. That and my family. I enjoy the things I do and thats all the purpose I need.

Today I'm listening to music, smoking weed in my woodshop and cutting angled bridle joints. A little chisel work and they'll be good to go.

The only purpose of life is to procreate. The rest you just fill up with as many hot women as you can bang.. and golf. There is no purpose to life.

So, you don't believe in objective good and bad. Only popular opinion. It's an approach, but you're just lucky to live in a Christian nation.

Interestingly I dont agree with the no purpose, heaven or hell part, but I do agree that the focus should be on kindness, generosity and loving others.

I always wonder for some people because they believe in God, do good things, etc, but seem to only do it out of fear of hell.

If you're only doing good things because youre worried what will happen if you dont are you actually all the way good or are you just acting that way out of fear?

Non-religious people getting bent out of shape by true believers is strange. I choose to believe, but if someone else refuses, I’m not going to get upset. You do you. It’s not difficult to find the word.
