I'd tell you but I'm not sure if I really feel the way I feel.

Good music on Beale, good BBQ (if you like brown sugar on everything), town is shite, people seemed nice during the day, don't get lost at night.

When I'm in town I usually head to Orange Mound and see what the locals are suggesting for the weekend.

Memphis gets a bad wrap, and it’s of course partially warranted, but the posters making it seem like Memphis is Afghanistan are extremely exaggerating.

This right here. Ive lived in Memphis for 35 years and this guy is spot on. Like any metro area of a million plus people you are going to have problems, crime, blight etc and etc.

The key thing to being in Memphis is know your surroundings. If you find yourself in a part of town you shouldnt be in, and it will be very obvious, leave. If you have to be in a part of town you shouldnt be in, dont act like a jack arse and go about your business but leave as soon as you are done with your business.

Memphis is very laid back, very slow paced and could give two shits about the rest of the state or our neighbors in AR or MS. It is its own beautiful, crazy, stupid, lovely place.

And yes...driving here is absolute mayhem

Also, Orange Mound is not the "worst ghetto in the US"...its not even the worst community in Memphis.

I went to an insane club there called 616 back in the mid 90's. Good times.

The a-hole of Tennessee.

I would call it the a-hole of the region but it is too close to Jackson, MS, and West Memphis, AR.

Memphis is third in line, behind Jackson, MS and NOLA as my least favorite cities in the country. Imagine Jackson, MS times 5 and you are there.

I drive from Collierville to the airport area every day on 385/240 South Loop. It's insane some of the things drivers try to do in rush hour.

Central BBQ is some of the best Q i've had. Excellent.

The music scene is still good. downtown has a big racist chip on it shoulder though.

It was developed by blacks and was always a black neighborhood. But I haven't heard of anyone referring to it as the "worst ghetto in the US" until this thread.

You are right that there are probably a half dozen neighborhoods in Memphis and probably many more in New Orleans that are worse.
