I just can't get over the idea of denying your kid an Elf on the Shelf just to stick it to the man and mainstream America.
I fully admit it is a silly little toy, but that is precisely why I find it so ridiculous for someone to draw the line there.
If you're a good parent you can get your kid an elf and raise a good kid that is independent and thinks for himself. The fact that people are acting like they are mutually exclusive says a lot about what type of parent you'll be. I've got no problem if you don't want to do it for your kid, but to brag about it on a message board is a bit over the top.

I am not doing it because of either of those reasons. I don't agree with it and it's use as a parenting tool.
We complain about the entitled generation, yet some of the reasons I am hearing to buy the damn thing is because the kid asks for it. That's an awful reason.

Wow. My five year old son or younger ask for an elf on the shelf (I didn't wait for him to ask for it) and I give it to him, that teaches him entitlement. Wow. It's an extra 20-30 days of magic in their lives because of their youthful innocence that will be gone in a few years. And to see how happy and excited they are about it, it's like a mini Christmas morning each day. It's not about me or their friends, it's about the excitement and joy it brings to him.
