Sorry, I won't be one of those parents that buys everything my kid asks for, that's just not the way I was raised or want my kids raised.

Wow. My five year old son or younger ask for an elf on the shelf (I didn't wait for him to ask for it) and I give it to him, that teaches him entitlement.
If you make a habit of buying things just because they ask for them, that will do it.
I am not saying I will deny everything my kids ask for, but it will not be habit and just cause they ask for something is not a good reason for me to buy it.

It's a lazy parent crutch. Not looking for a quick fix to bad habits. It also builds way too far on the Santa lie IMO. I don't want to build gullibility into my daughter, I want her to question and examine the world.
Is this better?

Listen man. Go get an elf. Put it on your shelf. Quit being an a-hole.

I just can't get over the idea of denying your kid an Elf on the Shelf just to stick it to the man and mainstream America.
I know a good bit of people who refuse to do Santa for their kids. They say something to the effect of, "Why would I drop hundreds of dollars on stuff for my kids just to lie and say someone else gave it to them?"
The above reason is like someone only giving to the poor if the poor knows it was THEM specifically that gave (like only adopting a family for Christmas if they get to deliver it themselves)... only tipping when the waitress/bartender SEES them tip.. etc.

Not really and honestly I don't know where to go with that one yet. That's a much bigger discussion than elf on the shelf.

so you're not a parent yet?
let's revisit this when you are.

Apparently you missed the part where I said I do have a kid.

don't feel too bad. I hadn't heard of it until last year.

Seems like lazy parenting in order to get children to behave. What's the difference between that, SC putting lumps of coal in stockings or an elf reporting on children's behavior.

Because I don't want to go and sheep a new Christmas tradition with the rest of you? Sure, that definitely makes me a bad parent. I don't agree with it as a parenting tool and it won't be happening. If she comes home from school asking about it, it will be explained in a way me and my wife see fit. If that gets back to your kids, tough shite. The parenting of my child won't be dictated by the whims of other parents.
It's not a "parenting tool." It's just a way to have a little fun with your kids. If they enjoy it, cool. If not, that's also cool. You are the one taking this a little too seriously and making yourself sound like an insufferable douche in the process.

Honestly, i've never owned one of these things. my kids were too old by the time these things came out. my reply was to the buying something because your kid asked for it.. and i can't think of a better reason to buy something.
by the way Drew Brees has an elf on a shelf in his house. Guess ole Drew is a bad parent.

There has been some psychology studies that have found that to be true in a lot of cases. The Santa lie causing a big loss in credibility and trustworthiness of parents. Starting to question religion as well does happen a lot.
