I had a lab mixed with a touch of pointer and a splash of heeler. She died last September at the age of 13. She was very smart and loved playing with the kids. We sure do miss her.

standard poodle. smart as they get, very perceptive and human-driven, peak trainability, don't shed, great with kids, very athletic and fun. Had 3 and I'll never get another breed. We lost our last 2 a month apart and just got our new puppy

Border collie

Catahoula are awesome but you have to work hard with them because they are very strong willed.

Blue Lacy. Smart and great babysitters for the kids. Great nose for blood tracking. Definitely have plenty of energy and shed way less than the labs I’ve had.

Border Freakin' Collie
ding, ding, ding.

Mine is 12 months old. She trains herself literally. Yes, she does herd. Chickens, squirrels, my chiweenie, etc... and she can outrun a squirrel. Only dog I've found faster so far are greyhounds. Extremely loyal and lovable but you better get ready for the need to run them long periods daily. Border Collie's have the largest proportioned hearts of any dog and their stamina is insane. By the way, Chiweenies are a close 2nd.

Airedale Terrier is a great breed. Very intelligent and no shedding.

This. Ours just turned 1 and we couldn't ask for a better 1st dog for our young kids. Super smart. House broke in less than a week and the no shedding is a bonus.
Only negative is the 1st 5-6 months he chewed the shite out of anything that was left out on the floor

American Eskimos never get the love they deserve in these threads. Super smart & agile dogs. Beautiful, too!

We've had an Aussie/American Eskimo/Border collie mix for 10+ years and he is off the charts in every good way...50 lbs and an incredible pup.

He holds his own with our awesome 90lb Dutch/German Shephard mix too.

Best all around breed is a Springer Spaniel.

We loved our Cocker and now have two Springers. Springers are wonderful loving dogs with big personalities and are very clever. They require a lot of exercise but is hands down the best breed I have ever owned.

I bred Great Pyrenees for a while. They are great livestock guard dogs but good luck keeping them nearby. I have 60 acres with a house almost in the middle of it and that was not nearly enough land for them. They patrol huge areas. You have to pen them with the animals they are guarding or pen them and neuter them right at 8 months. I can't imagine keeping one inside a house.

Mixed with an Anatolian, you can get a shorter haired guard dog that roams less but is more aggressive, which is what we ended up doing.

Yea thats why some people call them "Disapyrs" We live in the city in a subdivision, have a large backyard that is surrounded by a 6' privacy fence. That seems to be enough to keep ours at home.

We had a GP/Anatolian...great dog, was my buddy, lost him to cancer :(

Rat Terrier

Golden Retrievers are shedding machines with little personality.

fricking love my Border Collie.

Downsides are incredible shedding and energy(she's a year old).

Upsides are too many to list.
