What is the balance between preserving Confederate history and progressing forward?

It seems as if you want to preserve the historical landmarks of much of the South, you are seen as a racist who longs for times of white supremacy. On the other hand, if you want to remove symbols that remind a portion of the public of repressive time periods, you are deemed a flaming liberal who is akin to Al Qaeda demolishing historic sites.

What is the common ground? Is there common ground? Is there a necessity to preserve Confederate-era monuments in public areas? Should Confederate-era monuments be untouched or should they be respectfully moved to museums or the like? Should they be removed from view entirely? And who gets to determine what is and isn't offensive?

The story today of the UNC chancellor and the "Silent Sam" statue on campus made me think about this. That story is here if you want to read about it.

There is no balance, silly. Just stop talking about it and admit that white and orange people are evil.

Battle landmarks good.

Monuments specifically built in the name of white supremacy some 50ish years after the war? Not so good.

The only progressing forward we should be talking about is rising again

Civilizations should always preserve, celebrate, and study their history no matter how good or bad. Because if you dont know the mistakes of the past you are bound to repeat them.

This is the PRIME reason history is erased as a regime begins to take over a civilization. Just as the liberal SJW groups are doing. Their puppeteers are using them to wipe history so they can gain more control over the population and move away from the democratic republic our forefathers fought and died for.

I understand why people want to preserve some of it, but ultimately the Confederacy lost. I've got about as much sympathy for their cause as I do for Nazi Germany. The only difference is we don't still occupy Nazi Germany.

Or you can just leave them alone and recognize that they were built a long time ago in a different time. It's not like the Stone Mountain carving stops black people from going there.

No. But the Germans didn't willingly give us those US Military bases on their soil as a going away present, either.

True.

My main point is that to the victors go the spoils. That's history 101.

I think preserving them IS progressing forward.

The state's rights argument is not lost.

History should be preserved. And it can still be appreciated.

What the Confederacy stood for was wrong. I don’t thing most people disagree with that. I can go at length for how disgusting the Confederacy was as a political organization.

But, it’s perfectly ok to look back to the conflicted people at the time and realize that everyone on the confederate side wasn’t an evil bastard. People were very conflicted and made choices harder than any today have ever had to make.

Some of those military people had to decide whether they were ok with the possibility of having to kill their neighbors, burn their kindred’s homes, etc.

I can appreciate those confederate generals and the love they inspired while being happy the Union won the war.

Recently, all I can think of the Civil War is tragedy.

They don't bother me one way or the other, fwiw. Let the municipalities decide what they want to do with them going forward.

How about we leave works of art, some over a century old, alone, and tell those who are butthurt to get fricked?

The romans and Aztecs genocided peoples, had slaves, scarificed people, etc.

Should we destroy the coliseum and the Aztec pyramids?

Should we tear down all remembrances of events that people find uncomfortable? World War monuments? Holocaust memorials? I'm sure the Vietnam wall is discomforting for some who were on the receiving end of that particular police action. I think if you are "triggered" by an inanimate object the problem lies with you and not the marble or bronze that make up the exhibit.

This. The confederacy was literally like todays trump supporters while the union army was the brave antifa soldiers

Agree.

Also should we disband the Catholic Church and erase all history of it? They are responsible for many more deaths than the confederacy?
Should we not recognize Great Britian any longer? They did lose the war to us and all.
What about Germany, France, Italy, Japan? How many of us would like all of those countries and their ancestors to not be recognized because they lost?
We dont because its part of our history, same as the confederacy. Not agreeing with something doesnt mean you erase it from history.

The most ironic part of it all is that it started with one crazy kid that decided to shoot up a black church in order to incite a race war. We(our country) allowed him to accomplish his goal when silence and less overreaction wouldve made everyone forget about him.
