It’s citizens deciding what they want to represent their city. It’s not exactly isis blowing up 1000 year old church’s.

New Orleans is very black it shouldn’t be surprised that people aren’t thrilled their city is celebrating the generals that fought to keep their relatives in chains.

Great post.

We had balance until the left exploited the Dillon Roof shooting because they are historically ignorant.

Most of the statues and monuments our SJW Taliban had torn down were erected in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as part of a post Reconstruction healing period.

Assholes born in 1987 didn’t understand that because they are fricking retarded.

Except this whole thing was started by non locals.

The locals didn't care about the statues. It took some people to politicize it and tell them they should be offended.

I spent 35 years of my life not hearing a peep then it's front and center like it had been an issue in the city forever

False. Most were erected between the 1920s and 1950s as a not-so-pleasant reminder to Southern blacks that the confederacy may have ended, but the beliefs behind it hadn't. This was the period of Jim Crow, KKK, and the Civil Rights movement. The messages or, as you call them, memorials, were intentionally sat in the middle of Southern towns to remind those ni****s that they better know their fricking roles.

If a community understand the REAL reason behind the confederate statue erected on their town square in 1953 and STILL want it there, more power to them. Unfortunately, most think these are 150 year old statues truly serving as memorials instead of the symbols of hate that they truly are.

You need to be more nuanced. Some of these monuments are works of art.

I get that. I do. I understand their are legitimate reasons to keep them outside of "southern pride."

I just believe the people in each city should ultimately decide. I also think other cities or museums should be able to take them.

I think all history should be preserved if for no other reason than to recognize it and learn from it

Ahh we're going the northern aggression route instead.

Well, the average southern soldier didn’t give a crap about slavery and was mostly fighting to keep union soldiers from burning their cities and farms to the ground. These monuments are not “rewriting” history. They are honoring the dead. They’re basically markers for mass graves because so many people were killed in the fighting that they often couldn’t bury them all properly. The vast majority of those fighting were drafted. They had no choice but to defend their home from an invading army. You can argue the northern army weren’t invaders, but damn it if they didn’t behave like one. They imprisoned leaders and dissidents, they raped women, they pillaged and razed cities and towns, they plundered farms, etc. to the average southerner, they just wanted to keep their families safe. To paint them all as villains is reductionist thinking of the worst kind. Let the dead rest, and let the monuments to them stand so we can learn from them and not repeat the senseless killing that nearly depopulated entire regions.

I feel for the average Joe thay had to fight, but come on, most of these monuments are of Civil War leaders. They're not there to honor mass grave sites, they're there to honor Southern heroes.

There are some that fit your description, but to my knowledge, those are rarely the subject of major criticism.

If you think this movement to erase monuments ends here, you’re dead wrong. They’re already going after revolutionary war figures, veteran cemeteries, anti-bellum homes, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, etc. This is what communist agit-prop is all about. They start off with a position that seems somewhat reasonable and justified. They beg for an inch, take an inch, then another inch, and another inch, until they’re asking for absurdity but there’s no power left to deny them. The current monuments being debated now are simply seen as a line in the sand. They renamed a road on LSU’s campus which was named after a confederate soldier despite the fact that after the war, he was a professor at the university for decades. It is absurd what they’re doing all over the country to whitewash history and remove anything painful or controversial.

Go to the corner of Franklin Ave & N Galvez, show the first black person you see a photo of Robert E Lee and ask them to identify who it is and what he did in history.

I've got a crisp $100 for you if they answer one of those questions even close to correct.

No dumbass. Money, the reason for all wars. Governments dont start wars for human rights, people start revolutions for human rights. Now take that 7th grade education and go divide fractions or something.

I understand why people want to preserve some of it, but ultimately the Confederacy lost. I've got about as much sympathy for their cause as I do for Nazi Germany. The only difference is we don't still occupy Nazi Germany.

It's great how people put current political and societal norms on a society from 160 years prior.

I like how you compare what the United States was doing before and during the Civil War to Nazi Germany. Ya know, one of the most ruthlessly brutal regimes in human history? Surpassed probably only by Stalinist Russia and Maoist China.

The south left the union because slavery was the backbone of their economy. Like I said earlier, these attempts to suggest slavery wasn't the root cause are asinine.

I'm comparing two regimes that were defeated handily by the US and others. I'm not comparing their actions.

Saw a female comedian once. She was getting heckled by a group of black men and it was pretty racist. Finally she stopped her set and said:

"I don't know what we did to you all to make you so angry. I wasn't there. None of us were. I think it was a long time ago. But I tell you what

(dramatic pause)

why don't we all get together after the show and go do some looting?"

Banning slavery was the last straw. It was basically the north sanctioning the south and trying to collapse their economy. The war was about money and not trying to free slaves.

Link to any monuments on US soil that honor the Japanese soldiers in WWII?
