Is there a necessity to preserve Confederate-era monuments in public areas?
Nope. But unfortunately the South is full.of uneducated white snowflakes who melt whenever local citizens want to get rid of statues of loser and traitors to the US Constitution.
As luck may have it, today a judge overturned Alabama's "monument preservation act." So that is a victory for local governments to do as they wish.

Some woman ran for state Senate or something and that was one of her major platforms. Blowing up the face of the mountain lol.
That was Stacey Abrams, who ran for governor

More Union Generals owned slaves than Confederate
Jesuit priest's owned over 2,000 slaves in the 1800's

This subject is always fascinating to discuss. I agree on how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go. Will Snoop Dogg, Dre, and the majority of other rappers who objectify wornan as sexual objects be shunned in the year 2050 or later? Will the women’s movement claim victory and erase their history by having them thrown from music Hall of Fame’s, etc. These guys are legends and loved now but will that be the case in 20,40, 60 + years. Andrew Jackson is an American hero to most but the few Americans who are offended by his actions just may decide his fate in history moving forward. It would be a disgrace if the PC a wins on these fronts. Where does it stop?
As far as Confederate historical monuments/history I’m all for them being moved to public or private museums or private property but will that be enough for the PC crowd? Will they disrupt business at these establishments because they are still offended?

How about we leave works of art, some over a century old, alone, and tell those who are butthurt to get fricked?
The romans and Aztecs genocided peoples, had slaves, scarificed people, etc.
Should we destroy the coliseum and the Aztec pyramids
That's how I feel. We can leave them in place for aesthetics and still understand that slavery is/was wrong.

Comparing us history to Nazi Germany is fricking ignorant !!

Its pointless until the real reason for the civil war is taught in schools

You clearly misunderstood the reference.
The Nazis lost. The Confederacy lost. I'm not going to shed a tear monuments erected in their honor, after the fact, are removed by the victors.

States' rights, huh?
Balogna. States' rights had been a back and forth thing for decades, but the south did secede until the federal government came after that one particular right they couldn't concede.
The Civil War was mostly fought because of slavery. Any attempt to argue otherwise is the true revisionist history.

You need to be more nuanced. Some of these monuments are works of art.

I assume you consider it a victory so long as they are doing things that you agree with

The balance for me is I don't give a frick. Seriously.
Confederate history is part of our country's history so you can't make that go away, but the 2019 me doesn't support the confederacy (opposed to what my views would be if I lived during the 1860s).
I think that is where things get mixed up. Recognizing it as part of America's history and supporting it.

The traitors lost, the US won, and slavery was abolished.
You can brush up on Confederate history without stupid statues.
Get over it.

Funny that the US government didn’t agree with you at the time and explicitly say as much

And now you have a massive Federal government with its tentacles touching every single part of your life. Congrats on the victory.

State rights was the reason it was fought, but slavery was one of the main reasons the South was fighting for state rights.
