What is it with contractors of any kind and their inability to follow through?

I have been renovating my house little by little for a few years and each time I’ve had an appointment with a contractor the following happened:
1. They don’t answer their phone and never return voicemails or texts
2. They just don’t show up at the time they say they will
3. Or they just don’t show up at all
Yesterday I set an appointment for 8:00 this morning with a drywall contractor to come do some work for me. It’s 8:15 now and he’s not here. Not even a phone call to say “hey man, look I’m running late but I’ll be there”. Nothing!!
This shite pisses me off so much. WTF is wrong with them? Are they all dumb as a fricking rock and have zero customer service skills? My God this is ridiculous and I’m tired of it.
I need to become a contractor or some kind. They’re obviously making so much money that they don’t need my business!

Or maybe you are just an a-hole.

They get in over their head and/or crooks that will just take the deposit and hope the person moves on

He told me he’s slow right now and could come knock it out for me. If something bigger came up I understand but the least he could do is call me.
If you’re a contractor and you’re reading this post... frick YOU, you inconsiderate unprofessional dickwad.

I agree with you bruh. It is very hard to find someone reliable to do what they say they are going to do and do it well.
I think they have so much business, they don't have time for small stuff.

They have the same problem that most airlines do: once your money is in their bank account, you don't matter. The money they don't have yet matters.

They get other jobs and they simply don't care. That is the problem in a nutshell. Get your work done when they are doing it or you run the risk of not getting it finished. I have never found a contractor who works any differently. Even the best ones are hard to get back to a job.

I am a contractor, thank you.

We need our friend Matt to come back and jabber with us.

A lot are also working from behind. They need to start the next job and get that start money going just to keep alive. They already spent your money finishing someone else's job.

Hard to find people that take pride in their job/work these days. That goes for any field, especially contractors.

Quite hiring trash is all I can say.

You realize that many of the subs not only didn’t go to college but have a high likelihood of being HS dropouts too right? I agree with you but that’s what you are dealing with. Hiring anyone for low end job is a pain.

Yep. We finally got one started on our master bath yesterday. We started the process in February. First 3 contractors that came out never submitted an estimate. Got 3 more out, and only 2 submitted an estimate, one being really vague and incomplete.
This guy seems pretty solid. His references I called all said he was on site the entire project doing a lot of the work himself, and he's been on time the past 2 mornings.

What does this even mean? You pay upfront? Surely you aren’t that dumb.

Don’t hire contractors that expect money up front. Pay at the end of of the job. If the contractor can not float your residential project for a month, they are too risky to be doing business with.

Very frustrating, i have never found a profession that doesn't show up, doesn't communicate and don't finish in a timely manner most of the time more frequently than contractors. Like, i want to pay you to do a job and they still are always late, don't show up, whatever.

Exactly. No way I’m paying up front.
