re: What is it with contractors of any kind and their inability to follow through?

My dad told me- the contractor will lie. Double everything he says, from the initial cost estimate to the time required for your project. That will put you in the ballpark.

Its hard to find a good contractor.
The good ones are busy and the ones who are not are available for the smaller projects. That it in a nut shell.
Some try to take on too much work so they are dodging calls all the time. A lot of them are looking to do a hurry up job and get paid. They can be a bitch to deal with, but if you have a small project, they have bigger fish to fry.

I know another guy who owns a pretty large HVAC company who told me this exact thing about hiring at this company as well
Its also hard for them to find reliable workers. I know a guy who worked for his grandpa since he was 14. When his grandpa couldn't work anymore he took over. He was hoping to hire some young helpers that can learn from him, like he did from his grandpa. He had daddies asking him if he had a job for their son during the summer. He said every single one he tried to hire was lazy.
He said he had one kid, on his first day, after about 30 mins of "helping" him frame.. Just walked off, sat in the shade and called his mom to come pick him up.. Never seen him again.
Anyone who is out of school and doesn't already have a job, they only want to work because they don't have to take a drug test and they were unreliable. They did half arse jobs, etc.
At the time he didn't want to hire illegals so he got into another career. About 5 years later, got back into contracting and went the Mexican workers route. That's the only way to get good reliable workers.

My dad told me that if a contractor, roofer, painter, etc. says, "I can start right away." you may want to rethink hiring them.
The good ones stay busy and are usually worth the wait.

Ditch the Americans, hire the Mexicans. It that simple.

This shite pisses me off so much. WTF is wrong with them? Are they all dumb as a fricking rock and have zero customer service skills?

I'm willing to bet that this attitude of yours comes through loud and clear. I wonder why they're ignoring you?
He has that attitude becauae he is right, after dealing dealing with residential contractors for 35 years in several states my conclusion is 99% are worthless, and are only in the business because the entry requirements are so low.

Lots of people start these kinds of businesses because they have tools, and think it's easy.
Be thankful this is happening now, instead of in the 80 or 90's when things like licenses and bonding were pretty much fables. I unknowingly sold advertising to a few remolding crooks, and movers back then.

No because you are not their only fricking client. In addition, there is traffic, etc etc etc

I hired a glass subcontractor in Destin to install my shower doors and mirrors and they showed up on time to measure, gave me a quick estimate, I paid 50% deposit and they had all that shite installed in like 5 days and did a very good job. It was a very easy and quick process. I thought that shite was going to take several weeks to complete. It was that big glass place next to the donut hole on Hwy 98

I don’t do a lot of stuff like that and deal with a lot subcontractors and I was a good experience. I also had to get my ac looked at from an AC subcontractor in ft Walton beach and didn’t have any issues with them either.

They probably figure out that you are a shite client to deal with and aren't worth the hassle. You have any idea how difficult it is with people like you who only want to take small steps when it comes to a major project? Think we are going to tie ourselves up while you screw around trying to get other parts of the project completed so we can finish our work? Too many bozos who are either too cheap or too ignorant about the scope of the work they want done.

I need to become a contractor or some kind.
Do it, maybe you'll learn that you are garbage and fix your attitude.

Most homeowners have no respect for a subs time. They only want to pay for the time spent for a worker to be on his tools. They expect a free estimate and material list that could take many hours to compose but then only expect to pay for the day it took to do the job.

You are dealing at best with a high school educated person in most cases in residential ‘contractors’. Business skills are severely lacking in most cases also

I've never had a problem with showing once we agreed on when and for what.
