On September 11, 1973, a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende in Chile. The coup, supported by the United States, involved military jets bombing the presidential palace, and Allende ultimately died during the attack. The coup marked the beginning of a brutal military dictatorship that lasted for 17 years.
