It's still expensive
just got back from Winn-Dixie, bought two roasts because they were $2 per lb. cheaper than 80/20 ground beef

Ground beef costs 25% more than it used to, but stores have plenty

Supply shortages (caused by shutdowns in production due to virus, and panic buying) caused prices to increase. Increased prices caused people to buy less, as well as incentive both new market participants, and shut-down facilities to quickly clean up and re-open. Result is more beef hits the shelves. At the moment, prices are still high because of pent-up demand. But eventually, supply will remain high, and people won't buy as much, which will cause suppliers to lower prices to find a buyer.
Or, people had to start cooking more at home instead of going out to eat, and started realizing beef isn't cheap anymore, went on facebook and spread their sob story about beef being expensive, and idiots took it from there.

Yep, it's a combination of all of the stuff noted already. It did start though with some media fear mongering stories and then I think around Memorial Day(or maybe earlier in the month) there were some awesome weather weekends and people were buying meat like crazy to grill. So year of course shelves were going to be empty.

Remember the stories of the pigs being slaughtered and left in piles to rot, gallons of milk being dumped, and chickens being euthanized to make room?
Pepperidge Farm remembers

It was all being shipped to China to cover during their shut down.

It was a ploy by the "Big Deep Freezer" lobby.

no the price of ground beef shot up almost double for some grinds. it happened overnight, too
what was once $4/lb became $7/lb +

I had some people tell me that beef was $15 a pound for ground chuck. I never saw it at half that, and I actively looked for it.

I have no idea wtf you're implying.

I just got a bunch of chuck roast for < $2 per pound, and a 12 lb brisket for $18 last week.

Local grocery stores in BR still double what they were. Wondering when they plan on going down or just an excuse to keep prices high.

I tried warning the food board yesterday about meat shortages and price increases but for some reason the thread got whacked.

I took a pic and sent it to them every time I saw a price under $15, which was every time I saw ground chuck.

I work in Nebraska and haul from the beef plants frequently. They had massive outbreaks a couple of months ago, so they did the logical thing - shut down the plants, do a deep clean, let two weeks pass, test the employees and put the ones that test positive out on medical leave for a longer amount of time. Took a month to get the plants back online but they're mostly all back online now. It's not fear mongering - take off the tin foil hats, dummies.
But it is fear mongering. The same 3 pictures of stores out of meat circulated the internet and millions of people saw that, went out and overstocked on meat they didnt need. Most probably still havent eaten that meat yet.
The world wasnt going to run out of meat because a plant shut down for 2 weeks to clean.
