What Happened to Army Surplus Stores?

They used to have a lot of very cool shite in them. I used to buy most of my hunting stuff there during my childhood. Every town of any size used to have a store.
Does the army not have surplus items anymore?

They're called Army Surplus, but it's just a bunch of cheap Chinese crap masquerading as military surplus. We used to get this Vietnam-era bug juice from a surplus store in Vinton, LA, for hunting and fishing around Gum Cove. Deep Woods Off ain't got nothin' on this stuff.

Now we let the Iraqis and the afghans keep everything, and Gen X already bought everything leftover from Korea and Vietnam.

The supply system works much differently now. There aren’t mass quantities of extra gear getting dumped into the market like there used to be. Disposition is much more streamlined now too.

There’s one in DeRidder, and I visited one a decade ago in Central. Those stores have a very distinct smell to them.

Perret's is still operating on Williams Blvd. in Kenner and there's one in Slidell on the East I-10 service road still open.

I'd attribute that smell to all the treated canvas things they carry to help waterproof them.
I've slept in a few old Army green treated canvas tents and it is a very distinct aroma.

Yeah these days a lot of them just have cheap Chinese knockoffs .

Getting to go into Roger’s Army Navy store on 1st Ave in Bham just pass Sloss Furnace was one of the biggest treats as a kid in the late 1970s and early 80s.

We had a good one about 10 miles from my home but over time it moved to selling cheap crap and eventually closed. It was the tits back in the 70s-90s though.
