LoL at DEET. No mosquito bites but enjoy the birth defect offspring you will be having.
Deep Woods Off still uses 25% to 35% DEET. I think you might be getting DEET confused with DDT.

There are still a ton of them outside the gates of most army posts. I imagine the internet killed a lot of the rest.
I didn't see many army surplus stores around the bases I was housed at but I did see many pawn shops. And after a few months in uniform, I can see why that was so. Pay was shitty and to make it from month to month, one would pawn off anything of value to get a few bucks, then go get the stuff back once you got paid again.

There is one on Beal Pkwy in Fort Walton Beach

There is one here in Savannah, GA that is fairly decent. But it doesn't even come close to the ones here before when I was younger. There is an excellent one in Beaufort, SC.

Camo patterns are all over rated and just designed to be a new shiney hook.
One of my best buds used to buy the new camo pattern annually

Patterns are out. Solids are in.

Seems like it’s mostly third party vendors with new stuff. But some like Perrot’s in Kenner and the place in Slidell have a lot of legit surplus stuff plus from other countries.
you can still buy surplus gear in bulk on sites like DLA disposition, govdeals, etc. surplus stores buy stuff off of there and resell it in their store, which is why you can still find SOME genuine gear in surplus stores these days. but there just isnt the volume there used to be. also back in the day, local retailers probably "knew a guy" that did wholesale government sales, and that kind of thing, whereas it's all automated and online now for the most part.
additionally, there is much more emphasis on reutilization and redistribution than there used to be, which saves money for the government.
another thing is that uniforms and equipment are more specialized now, so stuff is a little more controlled and more deliberately disposed of.
like i said in my original post, the entire system is just much different now. believe it or not, it's actually a case of the government and the military becoming slightly more efficient.

that one is a bit of an outlier. i dont know for sure, but i think that guy has some hookups on PI and is able to get a lot of stuff that is damaged or unaccounted for somehow during recruit training. there's always a lot of shite leftover from a training cycle that gets left, plus recruits who have washed out for whatever reason leave their gear in a sort of no-man's land in the supply system. technically it should all go to DRMO, but just the nature of recruit training where there is such a large and continuous influx of recruits getting issued and then turning in gear in such rapid frequency, plus the chaos of recruit training in general. it's virtually impossibly to account for it all

A couple of guys I hunt with at Creole are like this! Then they complain about their hunting stuff being too expensive.
