I will never understand how someone can be bored
People tend to do a lot of self-discovery or exploration when bored.
I’d argue we’re not allowing ourselves to be bored enough.

Shitpost on TD which is better than drinking alcohol.

What do people who don't drink do in the evenings after work?
Drinking or not

Now that the weather is warm, I go for a swim almost every night.
But since it’s summer and I live in La, I end up having to get out of the pool after observing lightning from a nearby storm.

If I did this most nights, I'd be a fricking land whale.
Are you overweight?

TikTok will burn up all of your free time. I highly recommend you stay away from it.

I play with my kids and cook dinner until it's time for them to go to bed, then my wife and I watch one of the several shows we have going on. If she's got extra work to do, I'm usually in my garage tinkering with my mountain bike. I always have some little projects going around the house, so I might jump on any one of those. I try to go to bed by 930 though. Two kids under 3 will keep you pretty tired after work haha

I've quit drinking in the past month and was like you...this was gonna be boring without a glass or two of wine. After the first 2 weeks though I don't even think about it. And activities for me are the same, just not "enhanced" with alcohol. Work in my garden, cut down brush, work on some vehicle, paint or build something. Always something to do. I do listen to podcasts (or the Tigers) and/or call and catch up with people.
Seriously, after a period of weeks, you won't miss it or even think about it. And this is from someone who did like you did for 30 years. And why give it up? It's all about how you will feel the next morning. I love mornings now.
This. People should learn how to challenge themselves to their own success as this is just human nature. Save your drinking to times with friends/family instead of using drinking as a crutch to kill time.
Challenge yourself to do something outside or active. You may fail at first at whatever you try, but it will not be a waste of time. Drinking to kill time is a waste of time.

Not being critical of you personally, but it seems like anytime drinking or depression come up on the OT, multiple posters have this response ready to go. It’s just not a solution for everyone.

After work I will typically hang out with my dogs in the back yard and knock down a few beers while smoking a cigar. Most nights I'll have something going on the grill, and I'll usually come in the house around 9 or 10 o'clock. I'll usually go through 6 to 8 lite beers during this time frame. I've been wanting to cut back on how much I'm drinking and smoking, so over the past week I've cut it out almost completely (I had a few for fathers day). I've found that my evenings are now pretty boring and it makes it difficult to not pick up my old habits, even though I really don't want to. What do you folks who don't drink do to keep yourself entertained in the evenings? Just looking for some ideas to keep me off the beer and smoke. ETA: The kids are grown and don't live at home any more.
I go to the gym and then hang out in the back yard but not always drinking when I do.

Get home, yell at the kids for trashing the house then yell at the wife for letting them and not cleaning it up. Take the dog for an hour walk mainly to get away from everyone else.
Come home, microwave some dinners then angrily clean the kitchen while everyone stares at their phones. Yell at the kids some more before bed. Rub one out and go to sleep.
You really don't need alcohol if you stay busy.

I get off of work at 6, then go lift weights from 6:15-8. Then go home, eat, shower, pack whatever I need for work the next day.
On days I’m off from working out, play with kid, video games, or watch something on tv
So you voluntarily don't see your kid on days you workout?

I've been on a bender lately but usually go 6 to 8 months drinking only once per week. On nights I don't drink I take a walk with my dogs, cook, read, ride my bike, fiddle with my garden, or play guitar. If I'm sitting around idle I'm probably going to drink.

Side gigs, maybe I'll go play tennis/pickleball, might read, watch some TV, go on a run.
