My son also is learning to still talk. He has a speech impediment that hinders his ability to say and thus as a result spell and write certain words. He loses points when he does this as a result.
Does he have a 504 plan?
Curriculum is very advanced and structured these days. The amount of material they need to cover by the time iLeap starts is quite large. This is what the push to improve schools looks like. Teachers have been forced to basically become data collection experts.
After generations of crappy schools, I became an advocate for state testing and standards. But this crap has gone off the rails. There has to be a middle ground.

And able to absorb things very quickly..this is the time to expose him to as much as possible. In just a few more years you will no longer be able to change who he will become.

Retired elementary principal here. That seems like a lot of testing for first grade. If it’s a public school go to the department of education website and pull the standards for first grade. There may even be a pacing guide available. Maybe that will help.

Got a 2nd grader in gifted in a very competitive school district and that sounds crazy AF.

Teacher sounds like a bitch. I would tell them to frick off and let the kid be a kid. frick their quota.
Then tell your son that when he gets in middle/high school that his grades won't matter as he should be able to bang the pedo teachers and get an A.

my sons teacher insane?
Absolutely
No, that's not normal, that's damn near abuse. that's how you make a kid hate school and become depressed when older.

Yep, my kids are in advanced placement and never had that kind of work. Straight A students.

When our first got to PreK they said this will be like Kindergarten and 1st grade when you were in school. kindergarten will be like 2nd and 3rd grade and on and on. They told us to be prepared and they were not lying. My kid is in kindergarten learning things I didn’t learn until 2nd grade.

9-12 tests a week? How many subjects is in his curriculum? When I was in 1st grade I remember every subject had a test on Friday but we only took 4-5 subjects.

It's advanced pretty significantly. My son in 2nd grade has to read a 2 page story and then answer 15-20 questions about it. Some short answer. I was helping him one time and one of the questions was "what is the theme of the story?" I'm thinking Jesus Christ man.
As long as he's doing well I'm happy he's getting pushed, because kids need that in the era of everyone gets a trophy, but there's definitely been some nights of hoemwork I'm thinking they're insane.

They’re still getting them used to the school routine at that age.
They are doing that in Kindergarten now... what the OP describes is pretty standard for 1st grade. Not so much in the number of tests, but after the 1st 9 weeks, they are required to read the instructions and not have them read to them.

Zero way I'm spending two plus hours a night helping a 1st grader study, that's insane. My kid would be pulled out of that class with a quickness.

It's amazing how much more they do in 1st grade now than when I was in school. Yes, they have to do reading comprehension in 1st grade now. Yes, my kid takes just as many tests and has a bunch of homework to do too. This one teacher is not crazy.
