What are the normal expectations for a 1st grader

I just can't figure out if my sons teacher is expecting too much or not. Has 1st grade education suddenly become abnormally advanced?
My son has taken 9-12 tests every friday since school started. When the school was only in session for 3 days one week he still had the same number of tests. Its like weekly midterms.... All written testing which I thought was something even common core didn't start until around 3rd grade. This past week my sons teacher stopped reading test instructions to them for math and ela. So that means reading a 100 plus word story then reading another 60 words in question for 1 test they have 8 min to complete. They are still learning to read basic words! But the instructions contain complex words most adults do not know.
He has a test where he has to understand to find the correct demonstrative or article. So he has to read and understand the word demonstrative.
This is all in addition to a weekly 12 word spelling test and and testing on long and short vowel words. Tests in who the parish president is and mayor all the way up to potus.
Is this normal or is my sons teacher insane? My son has been coming home crying from the pressure they are putting on them. He is 6 fricking years old! When I press his teacher on it she cites the standard they need to learn. And he needs to get used to it...

Yes. People would be absolutely amazed what elementary students have to learn now.

Yeah she’s fricking crazy. No first grader should be expected to do that shite. They’re still getting them used to the school routine at that age.

You must be talking about Texas.
In Baton Rouge our high school juniors are still trying to learn the alphabet.

Send him to a worse school, problem solved.
That does seem a bit much for a first grader, how are the other students doing? Is he keeping up with them and are they struggling?

It's good if he/she doesn't eat Crayons. Caused me trouble.

She is not insane. She is holding your kid to the standards made by the government. If she doesn’t get him to meet those standards, she gets fired. Thank a politician.

What school is that if you don’t mind me asking?

This is in Livingston Parish
My neighbors have 2 kids in his school different teachers and after my son took his first 30 tests they finally took their first test. My nephew is also in first grade different school and I asked about his tests and nothing seemed abnormal.
My son has taken over 100 written tests before November.
I don't mind my son being pushed but this seems a bit much. He has all As and a B but I see that falling quickly now that she won't read and explain the tests to them.

No, most everywhere.
They might be working with the alphabet in Pre-k and the first semester of kindergarten. More likely, they're learning phonics, geometric shapes, making inferences about texts, and so on.
It's a completely different world now.

I'm referring to the level of studying required.
His teacher told me with a smirk she didn't believe in giving lots of homework. Well great but I'm having to spend 2 hours a night working with him until past a normal 1st graders bed time so he can keep up and then he gets at least 5 tests a week on subjects that I never even knew were taught. My son also is learning to still talk. He has a speech impediment that hinders his ability to say and thus as a result spell and write certain words. He loses points when he does this as a result.
