What are OT pet owners thoughts on vets?

Me too. Boarded my dog and they charged for a heartworm test I didn't ask for.

She has been on the 6m shot and they knew this...they gave it to her 3m prior to being boarded. Crooks.

Vet gave my dog 4 rounds of Parvo shots instead of 3

A competent Vet has only the pet's health and well-being in mind. That's how we operate. We've been open less than 3 years now, and our business has grown by leaps and bounds because we stick to this premise. Always question the necessity of what you're being offered. Some Vets will push tests and procedures just to generate revenue. But if they do their jobs with only the pet's health in mind, the results speak for themselves. And we NEVER do anything without the client's permission first.

I appreciate vets for what they do. It takes a ton of training to be a vet, and the vast majority of vets are truly caring people.

But I have to say, even though I believe in good veterinary services... the costs are starting to reach the breaking point. I spend more on healthcare for my pets than I do for myself every year.

That's a pricing trend that I think is out of whack with my priorities.

Pets do actually get sick and need vets just like people need doctors, so no, it's not a scam. It's just like human health care, you have to shop around and be an involved and informed consumer to get the care you want. I've had some vets that were clearly trying to upsell me on services and others that would do their job for free if they could. It's on you to find a vet you trust.

I take my dog to Destrehan small animal vet. They are extremely reasonable and friendly (I live in Metairie). My dog is about 18 pounds and for his annual shots, HW test, and a year of HW preventative comes to around $180.00. The last time they suggested a teeth cleaning. The Vet pulled off a piece of plaque I thought was a tooth, so yeah the dog needs it. He suggested to wait until January because they are offering a special for $189.00 for everything.

Not all vets are the same. Go to another vet, one that cares about your animal first and foremost.

Dental is silly?

You will say that when they have to pull a bunch of teeth because your stupid arse never got them cleaned.

Or when your dog has a big arse abscess or exposed teeth and suffers for it.

You are one dumb frick.

You have to at least get your pet rabies shots. Not only is it the law, but the real purpose of the shots is to keep humans from getting rabies. It's a miserable way to die.

An incompetent vet caused my dog to develop diabetes due to an inappropriately prescribed and inaccurate direction of weaning off prednisone. He developed diabetes shortly afterward.

I try not to blame the guy too much and assume the dog was likely prone to develop it eventually but I have no doubt this brought about the condition at a much earlier age than otherwise would have occurred. We have had to give the dog insulin injections twice daily for the past six years. We have since found a very decent vet that has helped manage the condition obviously well over the years to keep the complications to a minimum. And he just so happens to be the cheapest vet we have ever dealt with which is an unexpected added bonus. Our dog's care while becoming quite complicated became surprisingly inexpensive to deal with.

So tl:dr, my experience has been really bad and really good - like any doctor type, not all are created equal.
