re: What are BTR’s (Baton Rouge airport) long-term plans to remain competitive and viable

Houston does not serve all the small airports in the northeast, let alone mid sized cities like Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, etc
Has Houston seen scaled back service from the recent energy market slow down?

I used to fly out of BTR a lot for business. If Nola didn't have a direct flight I used BTR because it's easier to get in and out quickly.
Same. The only time I do MSY for work is if I really want a nonstop. And I fly MSY for personal travel since SO's family will keep our vehicle and drive us to/from airport.

It also helped that I wasn't paying so I didn't care if it cost more.
It doesn't even necessarily cost more - at least not for the places I go. By the time I get reimbursed for my round trip drive to MSY and by the time they pay my $50-$60 in parking fees, it doesn't save the company any money for me to do it.
BTR is more expensive, but rarely is it expensive enough for me to be forced to fly MSY. When all is said and done, it ends up about the same.

Right after Katrina didn’t BTR get added routes. I know I flew to Chicago from Baton Rouge on United. Thought they had NYC and maybe Washington as destinations back then too.
They had ORD, STL, DEN, DCA, NYC added

An issue as of now is the runway is too short to accommodate a fully loaded jet with luggage and fuel to get to a destination nonstop. My United flight to Chicago was on a regional jet but we had to make a fuel stop in Little Rock. Could not take off with enough fuel to make it nonstop with the passanger load, fuel and luggage. Imagine a flight to NYC or DC and it would probably be the same.
That was because the longer runway was being upgraded during that time. There’s no takeoff restrictions for any major aircraft that would serve BTR.

Good to know there was no restriction based on runway length. I guess I should have know this since I flew a mainline jet out of BTR to Houston back in the day on Continental. You just need to get the big 3 airlines to see there is a demand for flights from Baton Rouge. If anything they could just add flights to major hubs like New York, Denver, Chicago, Washington DC and Los Angeles. Most any destination in the US would be 1 stop away unlike now which might require 2 stops.

That would be nice

I thought I had read that it had, but I don't observe that market enough to know for sure

Throw an A319 in there and you could probably make it to Denver just fine. All the majors have those 319s so entirely possible to make it half-way across the country

I know Fed Ex is thriving in Memphis. On my most recent trip up there right around horn lake and Southaven you start seeing one after an other on dual runways

Frontier had a direct flight to Denver for a short time but it didn't last long. I took it a few times.

You need to cool it with these gregarious, cantankerous “takes.”

You can’t fly anything bigger than a crop duster out of BTR.
Sad

Baton Rouge and Lafayette both used to have nonstops to Denver before the recession.
Not sure what plane type.

UA used CRJ's to Denver. Not sure what Frontier used.
A few years ago there were rumors that MSY may become a Frontier mini- hub. That would be really cool.

I fly out of BTR about 90% of the time
Same, I fly once a month for work and have to connect whether I fly out of MSY or BTR
I rarely see cheaper fares to fly out of MSY versus BTR

People hate on BTR, but the wife and I fly out of there a lot. For a lot of our flights, you are taking a connection somewhere big anyway...even if it's departing from NOLA. I'll pay the extra to:
1) Uber 15-20 to airport and save on the parking for extended trips
2) Check-in and security takes like 10 minutes
3) Always a seat at the bar with plenty of drinks
4) Stress free airport. It's awesome.
Only time NOLA wins if there is a direct or if saves >$150 per person or something

And this is why we fly BTR. Besides MSY being a shithole, BTR is 20 minuets away (for me) and so much easier to negotiate. Plus, when I /we fly back in it’s a short ride home instead of an hour plus.
It would have to be a hell of a deal to get me to drive to MSY.

There is a limit to what they can do. Land locked by roads, railroad, and graveyard on several sides.
It will be a commuter+ airport forever.
I appreciate the efforts but if you live in South BR the time savings is limited and the lack of flight options means you'll pretty much always have to consider N.O.

Compared with Atlanta, yes. Compared with BTR, no.

The runway length isn’t an issue. And even if it is, they’re moving Plank Road 1/4 mile to the east.
BTR has plenty of room to expand, but it doesn’t need to do so. It needs to just improve service to existing hubs and add additional hub support as needed.

BTR is not a complete shite hole. It's small so it's missing the plethora of shops and restaurants, but it's a pretty solid airport for it's size imo. I usually fly out of BTR, but I only fly 3-4 times per year. I love the convenience of landing back at home.
