I don't think there's enough land on the east bank of the river to facilitate an airport that would serve about 13M travelers.
I was always curious as to why the "mega airport" was suggested for the west bank when the bulk of the market was on the east bank.
This would be an ideal spot for it if the terrain could support it. Easy access to both Airline and I-10. Close to New Orleans, Hammond, and Baton Rouge. MSY and BTR could be shut down and redeveloped.
They've built airports on much worse terrain before. BOS, LGA, and SFO are all on landfill.
I-10 would need a significant upgrade for this, but they are going to have to do that anyway.

That's a wildlife refuge
And all wetlands. The mitigation alone would be astronomical. Not to mention the idea is moot for another 20+ years with new MSY terminal.
The mega airport was intended to be on the east bank near the foot of the sunshine bridge IIRC.

Even south of I-10?

I just want a damn direct flight from Love Field to BR so I don’t have to keep going to DFW every time I want to fly in

I don't see Southwest entering BTR unless MSY gets a Frontier hub.

It allows people a quick escape from Baton Rouge. I would consider that a plus.
Yep. There is no better feeling than flying directly into your hometown. There is a value to that when I consider BTR versus MSY.

Like you said...it will be another 20 years before this idea is really considered either way since MSY is getting a new terminal, which will likely prompt BTR to upgrade their terminal and finally re-route Plank away from their runway.

Baton Rouge needs to be a destination first. You can build the shite out of the airport, but if you ain't got folks wanting to go to BR outside of LSU sports and occasional business travel why would you go to BR? NOLA is a tourist and convention mecca.
BR has more pressing needs like doing a loop study to see if it's feasible, or send some folks to another city to gather ideas to see why those cities are successful.

Yeah. I think AA would add ORD or IAD/DCA before DL added a NYC or DTW/MSP.
If Delta expands in BTR, they will just add more flights to ATL or put more mainline service in the mix.
A new link on United to EWR or AA to DCA are real possibilities in the near future though.

Which I'm fine with...I'd love another afternoon flight for late-evening connections.

Yep.

CCLA is closer to NOLA when you’re driving 80-85 down I-10. BTR takes longer time.

I think AA to JFK and UA to ORD makes good sense for route expansions.
On a layover AA to DCA replicates what DFW/CLT are already capable of. JFK improves 1-stop access to Europe and Middle East (important for oil companies) considerably.
Similar story for UA where both Europe and Asia Pacific (good for chemical companies) opens up considerably from ORD compared to IAH.

Right after Katrina didn’t BTR get added routes. I know I flew to Chicago from Baton Rouge on United. Thought they had NYC and maybe Washington as destinations back then too.
An issue as of now is the runway is too short to accommodate a fully loaded jet with luggage and fuel to get to a destination nonstop. My United flight to Chicago was on a regional jet but we had to make a fuel stop in Little Rock. Could not take off with enough fuel to make it nonstop with the passanger load, fuel and luggage. Imagine a flight to NYC or DC and it would probably be the same.

After Katrina BTR had Denver, LA, Cincinnati, Washington DC and I believe Detroit.

BTR will remain what it is today, if they are lucky. It certainly won't grow with the options available 80 miles away. MSY's new terminal and concourse are gonna be world class nice.

BTR will never get Southwest.

This one would be welcomed. Houston does not serve all the small airports in the northeast, let alone mid sized cities like Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, etc. My trip up to Buffalo today/tomorrow would've required me spending half the day with 2 stops each way making it up/back

unless they raze the whole shithole that is MSY, they can't enhance it enough to make it nice
That's so cute.

False. The runway is 7500 feet long.
Midway in Chicago and LaGuardia in NYC have shorter runways than BTR.
