I seem to remember Pittsburgh's airport being like this.

LBE and PIT both serve the Pittsburgh metro. The joke around here is that PIT is basically way out in Ohio. The terrain around here dictates that PIT be pretty far out. It takes me up to an hour to get from my house to airport security at PIT. I have to go through two tunnels and a bridge to get there as well, so traffic can be very unpredictable.

LBE used to feature Delta and Spirit Airlines service. Now it is just Spirit Airlines. I suspect Spirit will eventually stop service at LBE (Latrobe) since they have expended a lot at PIT, which is about to start a $1 billion terminal enhancement.

A closer comparison to MSY/BTR relationship would be like Dayton (DAY) and Cincy (CVG). To a lesser extent you have that dynamic at Philly and Allentown/Leigh Valley. They are just far enough to coexist, but close enough to for the larger to cannibalize the other.

Gotcha. Yeah, in the larger cities it’s nothing for people to travel 1+ hour to an airport.

I read something a while back about Livingston Parish developing a small private airport near interstate 12. I wonder how much land they are acquiring for that or if they'd ever possibly expand to be a replacement for BTR way down the road.

I used to do a lot of consulting work with PNC and Dollar Bank in Pittsburgh. I like Pittsburgh but couldn't stand Philly. Didn't they have a big T-Rex skeleton in the airport if I'm remembering correctly?

It would be the largest MSA in the country without an airport by a good 300k. Youngstown, OH is the largest last I looked. And it’s sandwiched right between PIT and CLE.

Youngstown technically has Youngstown-Warren regional. Allegiant is the only airline to offer service there. Only one gate.

Unlike Baton Rouge, Youngstown's economy completely collapsed and hasn't really recovered. That makes it difficult to see expanded service.

PIT has the giant T-Rex in the air-side terminal. They have plans to shut down the land-side terminal, which will eliminate the need for that underground train.

$1.1 billion Terminal upgrade at PIT

Some people think that the very expensive airport revamp may be due to the demands made by a large tech company potentially locating here.

Pittsburgh is a cool city. I had a few long nights at the Buckhead Saloon in Station Square

BTR is growing. Passengers rose by 4% in 2017 and is trending up for 2018. The bigger jets are having an impact.

BTR needs to keep pushing for bigger jets. Hopefully that will lead to more flights and a couple of new hub destinations.
quote:

"The key factor in BTR’s passenger growth was aircraft (upgrades). The majority of BTR flights utilized larger regional jets with first class and coach seating, or mainline Boeing 717 aircraft with multiple seating class options," airport officials said. "The airline seating capacity at BTR was up over 6% in 2017, and is scheduled to be increased another 6% in 2018 based on advance schedules."

We like it a lot. Unfortunately there's a good chance I may be moving to Detroit metro about 18 months.

Been there a bunch too. I'd rather Pittsburgh but the burbs aren't too bad. I worked in Auburn Hills a decent amount.

I don’t count Allegiant as an airline

I could survive there. Pittsburgh is a little farther along in reinventing itself, but Detroit is definitely seeing a bit of a rebound - particularly downtown and the area around Wayne State.

I'll be using the airport a lot, and DTW will be a nice change from PIT.

I'd be fine with moving around a little but I have 2 kids. 5 more years and they'll be done with school and I'm heading for the mountains.

I agree. It's a lot like LaTrobe airport in Pennsylvania (Arnold Palmer Regional). Nothing left there but shitty service from questionable discount airlines.

I could see BTR attracting Allegiant and Spirit. I will stick with Delta though.

It's a great airport and I love their skyclub.

I was able to sneak a peak of Delta's brand new A350 really early one morning before they went into service a couple of months back. They still have their old 747-400's parked there near terminal B.

I’m interested in AA’s BTR expansion. I’d give them a look. But I would take a lot for me to switch to AA from DL. I hate AA’s laid back and causal atmosphere. DL still has a bit of that nicer old school feel.

There's no lines at BTR. That's always going to be a selling point for me. The only times I entertain going through MSY is when they have a direct connection that is $100 or more cheaper.

The problem would be just like Frontier had.

Say spirit would come in and add BTR-IAH. UA would drop prices to compete with spirit’s once a day flight and run Spirit out.

One of my trips to the west coast this year was with AA. It reminded me why I like Delta so much.

If I were based in Baton Rouge, I'd seriously consider AA just because they have 2 destinations (with possibly a 3rd being added this summer) while Delta only has one. Delta has no interest in not shoveling as many passengers as possible through Atlanta.

My parents were stuck in SFO when ATL shut down in December. There were no other options to get back to BTR on Delta. They had to be re-booked on United.

ETA: I didn't know there were this many frequent fliers on Tigerdroppings. Are most of us Delta loyalists?

Seems like most of the fliers on TD use Delta. Delta had the biggest market share at BTR by a long shot for a long time.

It’s interesting to see AA catch them and probably pass them soon. Hopefully it wakes Delta up.

I love flying out of BTR. Parking and two seconds through security. The tall windows the length of the wall in the seating area past security that faces the runways is a nice touch. That’s a cool little feature that adds some character.

I think they are close to catching up.

Here are some articles on potential expansion at BTR, many mentioning how the larger planes are having an impact on passenger volume:
