I've been out in that area late at night many times. It's not that bad. That area is jam packed most nights. I ride blue bikes all the time in that area late and I've dined up and down St Claude. It's gentrifying. Mostly hipsters.

I’ll say it, Commanders is meh.

It’s fun for a group dinner for the ambiance but the food is not really awe-inspiring.

...and yet still much better than Emerils

But the old school 1400s Japanese food is ROUGH

You have to like really strong fish/seafood flavors, lots of oily fish, etc. I have a strong aversion to that. There's still a lot to enjoy, but you're right, you have to know what you're in for otherwise, it's the Japanese version of the meal in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

I rode on St. Claude thousands of time during the 70s, 80s and 90s and never heard up river or down river.

In what way? Commanders was at its zenith with Emeril and then Jamie Shannon at the helm. The current Emeril's is the best place in New Orleans since Anne Kearney was at Peristyle. RIP.

You probably don’t know uptown/downtown and riverside/lakeside either.

That actually looks really good. I've never had crawfish on a grilled cheese.

You’ve never been to Maine and had a lobster grilled cheese sandwich? It’s the tits. I need to try that crawfish version.

For pure dining pleasure, commander’s is the top of the heap. Everything is perfect. Not one single hair out of place.

Not any more. We still go once a year typically, but it’s not what it used to be overall. I haven’t had a bad experience there, but the food isn’t “as good”.

Emeril's wow. Reading the thread and I will have to give it a shot again. I was never a fan.

Definitely not anymore. Not even close.

I like Commanders but the two aren’t comparable food wise. CP is good but not overly special food wise

I prefer Saint Germain to Emeril’s but a lot of that has to do with cost and atmosphere

I don’t prefer the overly formal atmosphere anymore.

I think if SG was uptown they could probably take it up another level and go for 2. But in Bywater I’m not sure they can

Not enough people with money and who are also foodies in NOLA to support a lot of Michelin restaurants.
Plus the opportunity cost is particularly high in NOLA with the large number of options at under $100 a plate or even $30 a plate. You can get 10 great $30 meals in NOLA for the price of 1 exquisite foodie experience.
