BUYER BEWARE aka caveat emptor

quote:

The Federal Trade Commission is sending letters to 97 auto groups nationwide, warning them that the prices they advertise must be the total price—including all mandatory fees—that consumers will be required to pay.

The letters encourage dealers to review their advertising and pricing practices, including ensuring advertised prices include all fees consumers will be required to pay when buying a vehicle. At a minimum, this includes evaluating advertised prices to ensure they match actual prices charged to consumers. The FTC will continue to monitor the marketplace, the letters state, and will take additional action as warranted to ensure compliance with the FTC Act and other rules the Commission enforces.

“The Trump-Vance FTC is committed to preventing auto dealers from misleading consumers with low advertised prices and then adding on mandatory fees at the end of the purchasing process,” said Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “The FTC will remain focused on monitoring auto dealerships to ensure that the market functions efficiently and competitors are transparently competing on price.”

quote:

The letters the FTC sent to the auto dealers cite several examples of illegal pricing practices in the auto industry including:

*advertising a price that does not reflect all required fees,

*advertising a price that reflects rebates or discounts not available to all consumers,

*advertising a price that fails to take into account the amount of an additional required down payment,

*conditioning the advertised price on consumers using dealer financing,
requiring consumers to buy additional items not reflected in the advertised price, and

*advertising unavailable or non-existent vehicles.

They will start showing the full cost in their adverts and Trump will be accused of increasing inflation.

Just went through this...

There's a lot more than 97 of them pulling this bullshite.

The car I bought was the price +$85 fee.

One Greensboro, NC dealer advertised a price and then said it was $3000 more if you paid that price in cash.

ETA: 97 groups is likely 100s of dealers..

ETA# 2 : correction, the dealer was in North Carolina, not South Carolina.

The vast majority of car dealers are an absolute den of thieves. Most have always been shady but it seems since the Covid era their abject deceptive practices and pricing hubris has exponentially gotten worse.

When BS like this happens, get a hardcard on paper and report it to the FTC:

ReportFraudto FTC

The only way this crap is gonna stop is when the Dealer Principles, Owners, shady F&I managers, General managers, sales managers are in prison doing hard time in an 8x12 prison cell.

I've seen a lot of horseshite in buying cars and trucks over the years, but that one took the cake.

I was gonna pay the price they advertised as they were about on the money, and those cars are getting a bit hard to find.

When I called and was ready to buy, they pulled that crap. I'm out.

They kept texting, so I sent her a Pic of the car I bought and then blocked her.

There are plenty YouTube vids that expose just how unscrupulous and orchestrated some dealers can be.
If you are thinking of a new or used car, it is well worth the time spent to educate yourself on some of their tactics.

Just buy a tesla. Zero negotiations. All prices disclosed upfront. You just go and pick up the car. Best car buying experience. Don't have to deal with some high school dropout dickwad trying to frick you

Let Tesla develop a truck that doesn’t look like it belongs in some Bull Dyke Rodeo and I’d be interested.

When I negotiate price with them I tell them to include their fees because I'm not paying any dealer add ons after the fact.

You can do this with a dealership as well. Call three or four high volume dealerships and get the name of fleet manager (typically don't work off commission). Send them an email with the specs of the vehicle you're looking for and ask them to send back a quote that includes all fees. Most of the quotes will come back within a couple hundred dollars and in line with what should be a fair price.

Call dealership tell them what time you will be there and ask that they have paperwork prepared before you get there.

Go to dealership to test drive and pick up your vehicle.
