James Lindsay is all over this

Some may not like him, but he constantly posts examples of real academics talking about how to reduce white supremacy in hard sciences/math, the influence of culture on science, etc.

He's got a great podcast talking about how a paper on feminist glaciology is what really got him into it.

This is a real answer from the author talking about the paper:

quote:

The good news is that people are talking about glaciers! But there’s much more to the story than just the glaciers. People and societies impose their values on glaciers when they discuss, debate, and study them—which is what we mean when we say that ice is not just ice. Glaciers become the platform to express people’s own views about politics, economics, cultural values, and social relations (such as gender relations). The attention during the last week proves our point clearly: that glaciers are, in fact, highly politicized sites of contestation. Glaciers don’t have a gender. But the rhetoric about ice tells us a great deal about what people think of science and gender.

It's absolutely insane, and it's very real, apparently.

You know, how in the world is it not the most racist thing in the world to say "white culture" promotes an avoidance of conflict and intimacy? Or that there even exists a unified "white culture" at all?

How soon would my life be over if I made an identical picture talking about "black culture"?

i mean, we kind of do

you have to get into the real questionable areas like the Mediterranean to see white cultures who love conflict. and i can say this as an italian whose ancestors were called not white for the cultural differences, including this.

some of these sound very directed and possibly very racist if we carried the implications out. my favorite is the "rigid time structure"

the alternative? Colored People Time!

quote:

She thanks him for endorsing her, but adds, "Took you long enough." De Blasio, who ran Clinton's campaign for Senate in 2000, notoriously held off on endorsing Clinton.

"Sorry Hillary, I was running on CP time," said de Blasio. "CP time" is slang for "colored people time," an idea that plays on a stereotype that black people are late all the time.

this is normally the type of things that I write off as Twitter retard nonsense, but then actual academics and the fricking Smithsonian is printing shite like this and I just have no idea what to think

but I do think people like James Lindsay exposing and showing it to people will help quell some of it

I hope
