Losing a child at any age is the absolute worst nightmare a parent experiences.

I pray for those grieving parents, siblings, and friends.

I've ran a light and hit a car. It wasn't at all on purpose. It was a situation that has only happened once or twice in my 15 years of driving where I don't even recognize there's a light until the very last half second.

that’s why you have to fricking pay attention when you drive - the car is not some place to ‘zone out’

Anyone that has been driving on public roads for any length of time has made a mistake or 2. Anyone that says they never have is a liar.

Mistakes happen, accidents happen.

Obviously, impairment due to drugs, alcohol, or a phone is a different deal.

You seem quick to jump to conclusions. How do we know the other driver was not the one drinking? It's also possible that both were under the influence.

I think the speculation comes from she is dead and the other driver isn’t, if they got them on the field test or blood test, we would already know it, the cops would have taken action that night and the rumor mill would be blaming the other driver already. People are a lot more sensitive when it comes to putting blame on popular kids, especially when they are dead and can’t get a ticket or go to jail.

bingo. The other kids in the car were endangered as well. Thankfully they made it out safe

If the other driver were drunk we’d already know. Toxicology will take a bit to come back for her

One of life’s cruelest punches in the gut to lose a child before they’ve really lived.

One of my best friends from childhood lost his brother in a motorcycle accident (about 2-3 miles from their home), then my buddy had a heart attack and dies years later. These were the only two kids in the family.

I was a pallbearer at his funeral and saw the look in his dad's eyes, he mumbled to me crying "Why Me".

Burying a child has to be the hardest thing in life.

This

There have been a couple of instances in my 20 years as a driver where, for whatever reason, my eyes were focused on set of stoplights only to realize too late that they were the lights at the following intersection rather than the intersection I was immediately approaching. Luckily when that has happened I either broke to a halt at the last second (with no one behind me to rear end me) or completely blew through the intersection with no cars coming through from the other directions.

Was for me and I wasn’t doing anything illegal or questionable. Especially on a weekend or holiday.

One of my best friends died in an auto accident at 27 and 10 years later his older brother had massive heart attack at a pretty young age. Their mom and dad had to experience both.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but the DUI/OUI limit is .02 for minors. A beer or two, max, would put a female, high school cheerleader over the limit. I don't know how tall this girl was, but I'm guessing she only weighed 100 - 110 lbs, maybe even less. Almost no chance she was over 125 - 130 lbs.

O.08 is ridiculous for adults. Back when it was 0.1, I had a friend get a DWI at West End (while still daylight) after supper at Fitzgerald's. He swears he only had 2 Miller Lites, but admits the possibility that maybe he had 3. He blew a 0.11. The only reason he blew is that he was so sure he would pass the test.

0.02 is beyond ridiculous. If it would be 0.00 it would be more effective.

If everyone had to blow before a game, including 17 - 21 year olds, how many people would pass? (And I know it's not illegal to be "drunk" while watching football, but all those people need to get home somehow.)

In summation, lighten up on all the "she was fricked up" comments. You don't know that at this point.

Maybe she was just tired bc it was late, and made a mistake. Like many of us have. Coming off if I-12 that time of night/morning? Absolutely not. 17 is still under my roof. You don’t get to drive NYE. You stay where you land or stay home. They break my rule, it’s their risk, but I did my job. This is horrible. For both drivers.

Nope, the police have stated alcohol was a contributing factor.
