No defense for it. The French got their asses handed to them, and we went in there to fight a Two Hand Touch War and got penetrated for our efforts. It was the arse kicking we desperately needed, but we learned nothing from it.

Tangent time, would it have really been the end of the world if Vietnam went communist? Was it necessary to lie to force us into a proxy war with the Soviets? That begs a further question, was all the undermining the CIA did around the globe to end Communism the reason Communism failed, or was it all for naught because Communism was doomed to fail? Deep thoughts for a Monday morning.

The last justified American war was the civil war. You can make an argument for WW2. The rest were rackets

To CharlieLake:

I said probably because I believed intensely in what I was fighting for while I was there. I bought into it.

Afterward, when I aged and learned more about our involvement, I realized the folly of it all.

Today, I still try to hold onto that notion that what I fought for was noble. But I know better. That is why I say probably.

I was an 0311 with Kilo 3/9 in 1969 — Vandebilt Combat Base, Rockpile and Khe Sanh. Two Purple Hearts.

This current heat wave in the BR area rivals the Vietnam heat but not the nighttime humidity.

Should have had the Air Force turn NV in a ruin, bomb them into submission. They would have folded quickly instead of platoons slogging through the damn jungle.

Huge mistake to fight a war without going all out to win. Police actions sux.
If you break it you fix it.

It would’ve been winnable had we won over the south’s population.

Without that it was an absolute mistake.

Walter Cronkite and a lot of the media from back then should have rotted in jail along with the punk arse protesters.

We should have gone in and destroyed North Vietnam. Whatever the Navy could not reach perhaps we force the bastards to fight set piece by invading . We don't hold anything we bulldoze it. Leave the place a smoking flattened defoliated ruin tell the world never eff with us and tell Walter to suck it.

Fast forward to 9-11 2001. If the idiots that executed planned and supported that did not get the message sent by what was done to North Vietnam we teach them and the world an even bigger one.

That was a planned decapitation strike. They were going to not only do what they did but take out The White House and The Head of State. Big Mistake Abdul.

What should have been done would have had the total support of a very very angry American Populace who wanted to hit back Hit back hard.

We should have used tactical nuclear weapons to get Bin Laden at Tora Bora, make glass craters where the terror camps and poppy fields used to be, and wiped out their major population centers. Basically we destroy Afghanistan.

Those people love to fight, they live for it and have beaten just about everyone sent at them.Well there would be no Americans to fight the Jihad with, they would not be there.

In their stead would be Mr Kiloton and Mr Megaton, and no jihad can stand against those guys.

Sigh.

This is such a dumb and tired tough-guy take on Vietnam that lacks any kind of actual education on the topic let alone nuance.

Depends who you ask.

It worked out great for the military industrial complex, for the example.

For my veteran dad, not so much.

I have written on here before on my feelings about all this. But I’m tired fighting the “Presentism” that infects the thinking of current younger Americans who always seem to want to critique history based on current thinking, morals and values. (see WWII atomic bombings) Fifty-plus years ago, most of America was a different place and people and — for better or worse — viewed the Communist threat more aggressively. Was the war a mistake? Probably.

well said, sir.

so many hot takes on this thread that lack any semblance of context. it seems like every opinion in 2023 about Vietnam is either COMPLETE MISTAKE AND TOTALLY CRIMINAL AND WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING or WE SHOULD HAVE NUKED HANOI. there is a grey area between those two extremes the size of the Pacific Ocean and the truth lies somewhere in there.

Agreed, but specifically NVA forces (including armor) were caught in the open in Quang Tri and Thua Thien provinces (the area of operations I was familiar with) in the 1972 invasion and were defeated by the ARVN ground forces, but with the assistance of American tac air.

LBJ is the wurst president in American history. This was just one of his incredible failures that had negative impacts on this country for generations.

We’ve had ineffective presidents and presidents that I believe are a few really bad decisions. LBJ damaged this country irreparably.

because derp derp bombs derp derp murica

one of the easiest ways to tell someone has no idea what they're talking about when they talk about the middle east is they view each middle eastern country in terms of borders and national identities like we do in the West.

To send a message to the world that you do NOT attack the US. Destroying Afghanistan is really a public service to the planet.

I have mentioned the Saudis in other posts. Anyone involved either gets a Tomahawk through their window or is assassinated by other means. I really don't care who it was they die badly and if the powers that be there didn't like it they could be reminded that we have plenty of nukes left and we ain;t afraid to use them.
